Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guest

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was a glittering sea of gold, crystal chandeliers, and black-tie elegance.
Over four hundred of New York’s most powerful corporate titans, politicians, and socialites filled the room, sipping vintage champagne while string quartets played softly in the background. At the head table near the elevated stage sat Eleanor Vance. She was draped in a floor-length emerald silk gown, a massive diamond necklace sparkling against her throat, smiling warmly as photographers flashed cameras in her face.
To the world, Eleanor was the grieving, saintly sister who had stepped up to run the Morrison Charitable Foundation after the tragic, untimely death of her sister, Lauren.
I stood in the private mezzanine balcony overlooking the ballroom, wearing a custom black tuxedo. Beside me stood Annie Reed.
She didn't look like a housekeeper tonight. She wore an elegant, midnight-blue silk dress that draped gracefully over her frame, her dark hair styled in soft waves over her shoulders. She looked stunning, poised, and fierce.
"Are you nervous?" I asked softly, reaching out to gently touch her hand where it rested on the brass railing.
Annie looked up at me, her dark eyes clear and steady. "I spent three years working in a women's shelter before I took the cleaning job at your estate, David. I’ve seen monsters in expensive suits before. I’m not scared of her."
I squeezed her hand gently. "The boys are safe with Marcus and the tactical team at the safehouse in Connecticut."
"I know," Annie smiled softly. "Now go finish what Lauren started."
Down on the main stage, the music faded as Eleanor Vance stepped up to the podium, tapping the microphone with her manicured fingernail. The chatter in the room instantly died down as the audience turned their attention toward her.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," Eleanor began, her voice dripping with practiced warmth and emotional reverence. "Fourteen months ago, my heart was shattered when my beloved sister, Lauren, was taken from us in a horrific road tragedy. But tonight, as we raise funds for pediatric trauma research in her honor, I am proud to announce that Morrison Dynamics is stepping into a new era of global leadership..."
Eleanor paused, putting on a brave, somber face.
"Regrettably, as many of you know, my brother-in-law, David Morrison, has struggled deeply with the psychological toll of this loss. His absence from corporate governance has been difficult for us all. Therefore, as the primary legal trustee of the Vance-Morrison estate, I will be putting forth a motion at next week's board summit to assume executive oversight of—"
CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.
The slow, echoing sound of single-handed applause cut through the quiet ballroom like a gunshot.
Eleanor froze mid-sentence. The crowd gasped, heads turning toward the back entrance of the ballroom.
I stepped down the grand marble staircase, my hands casually tucked into my trousers pockets, walking down the central aisle toward the stage. Two of my senior attorneys and three federal investigators from the Department of Justice walked silently behind me.
Eleanor’s face paled slightly, but she quickly recovered, forcing a sweet, maternal smile onto her lips.
"David!" Eleanor gasped into the microphone, her voice laced with fake concern. "Darling, you didn't tell us you were feeling well enough to attend! Please, join us at the head table—"
"Save it, Eleanor," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the ballroom's sound system as I reached the foot of the stage. "I'm not here to join your dinner. I'm here to deliver a report from my dead wife."
A collective, shocked gasp rippled through the four hundred guests in the room. Photographers immediately began snapping cameras furiously, blue light flashing across Eleanor’s rigid face.
"David, you're clearly unwell," Eleanor hissed, stepping out from behind the podium, her tone turning cold and quiet. "Guards, please assist Mr. Morrison to his vehicle—"
"My guards control the security perimeter of this hotel, Eleanor," I said calmly.
I gestured to the large projection screens mounted on either side of the grand stage—screens that had been displaying photos of the charity foundation five minutes ago.
The screens suddenly flickered black.
Then, a massive wave of financial documents, Swiss bank transfer receipts, and offshore wire logs began scrolling rapidly across the high-definition displays for every billionaire and journalist in the room to see.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as she turned to stare at the screens in sheer horror.
"Those are the eighty-four million dollars in stolen patent royalties you funneled through shell corporations over the last four years," I announced loudly, turning to face the crowd. "And that was just the beginning."
I reached into my tuxedo pocket and pulled out a small remote control, pressing the central button.
The audio system of the Plaza Hotel boomed with the sound of rain, engine hums, and then... Lauren’s terrifying final words.
"It's Eleanor. She's been transferring the patent royalties... Oh God, she's behind me—she hired them—Jordan, Justin, cover your eyes! HOLD ON TO ME!"
The ballroom exploded into utter chaos.
Women gasped, men stood up in outrage, and corporate board members stared at Eleanor in absolute, unadulterated horror.
Eleanor stood frozen on the stage, her diamond necklace rising and falling with her frantic, hyperventilating breath. Her pristine socialite mask shattered completely, revealing the wild, feral monster beneath.
"YOU LIE!" Eleanor screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice turning into a ragged, guttural howl that echoed off the crystal chandeliers. "SHE WAS A FOOL! LAUREN WAS A WEAK, PATHETIC FOOL WHO WAS GOING TO RUIN EVERYTHING I BUILT! SHE DESERVED TO DIE IN THAT CAR!"
The entire room fell into a suffocating, dead silence.
Eleanor’s own confession echoed through the speakers, recorded live by every news camera in New York City.
Two federal agents stepped onto the stage, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from their belts.
"Eleanor Vance," Lead Agent Miller said coldly. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the federal agents dragged Eleanor Vance off the stage in tears and handcuffs, she looked past me, her eyes locking onto Annie Reed standing at the top of the marble stairs.
May you like
"Who are you?!" Eleanor shrieked at her as she was pulled away. "WHO ARE YOU?!"
Annie didn't answer. She simply stood straight, her arms folded over her chest, watching the monster who had tormented two innocent little boys get dragged away into the dark.
