Chapter 6: The Emergency Hearing

The Nashville family courthouse was surrounded by reporters and flashing cameras on Friday morning. Ethan’s private security detail formed a human shield around Ethan, Maria, and Sophia as they rushed up the marble steps. Sophia was wearing her yellow raincoat, holding Ethan's hand tightly, unaware of the gravity of the situation but sensing the danger around her.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocating. Julian Vance sat at the opposing table, looking smug and victorious. He nodded mockingly at Ethan as they took their seats.

Judge Evelyn Harrison, a stern woman in her late fifties with a reputation for being strictly by-the-book, banged her gavel. "We are here for an emergency hearing regarding the temporary custody of Sophia Santos. Mr. Vance, present your case."

Julian stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. "Your Honor, it is a matter of public record that Maria Santos is residing in this country illegally. She faces immediate deportation. Her presence in the home of Mr. Ethan Cole is a volatile situation. We believe the child is at risk of being abruptly removed from the country or abandoned if the mother is detained. We request the child be placed in temporary state protective custody until the mother’s immigration status is finalized."

The judge frowned, looking over her glasses at Maria. "Ms. Santos, what do you have to say to these allegations?"

Before Maria could speak, Diana stood up. "Your Honor, the opposition’s claims are not only malicious, but they are also completely obsolete. We have filed an expedited emergency petition with the federal government this morning. I would like to present to the court a certified marriage license."

A collective gasp echoed through the small courtroom. Julian’s smug smile vanished instantly.

"Mr. Ethan Cole and Ms. Maria Santos were legally married this morning at 6:00 AM in a private civil ceremony," Diana announced proudly, handing the documents to the bailiff. "Furthermore, Mr. Cole has filed formal papers for the legal adoption of Sophia Santos. As the spouse of a U.S. citizen and the adoptive daughter of one of the state's most prominent figures, an emergency stay of deportation has already been granted by federal authorities pending her permanent residency status."

Julian slammed his hands on the table. "This is a sham! Your Honor, this is a fraudulent marriage constructed solely to evade immigration laws and obstruct justice for my brother’s case! They’ve known each other for barely a year. She was his housekeeper!"

"Mr. Vance, sit down!" Judge Harrison barked. She reviewed the paperwork thoroughly, the silence in the room deafening. Finally, she looked up, her gaze fixing on Ethan. "Mr. Cole. You are a man of immense public stature. Are you telling this court under oath that this marriage is a union of love and a genuine commitment to form a family?"

Ethan stood up. He didn't look at the judge; he looked down at Maria, whose hands were trembling, and then at Sophia, who was looking up at him with wide, innocent eyes.

"Your Honor," Ethan’s voice resonated through the courtroom, powerful and unwavering. "For years, I lived in a house made of stone and money. I was surrounded by people who wanted something from me, people who lied to me—like Marcus Vance. But when Maria entered my life, she didn't care about my money. She cared about my soul. She and her daughter taught me what it means to actually live. I didn't marry Maria to save her from the law. I married her because she saved me from myself. I love Sophia as if she were my own flesh and blood. I will protect them with everything I have."

Maria wiped away a tear, a profound sense of awe washing over her. Julian looked furious, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple.

Judge Harrison looked at Julian, her expression cold. "Mr. Vance, your petition for temporary custody is denied. The child is in a stable, loving home with two legal guardians. Furthermore, this court finds your sudden interest in this child's welfare to be highly suspect given your brother's ongoing criminal trial. If you attempt to weaponize this court for a personal vendetta again, I will hold you in contempt."

Bang! The gavel fell.

They had won the first battle, but as they exited the courtroom, Julian intercepted them in the hallway, out of earshot of the press. His eyes were wild with hatred. "You think you won, Cole? You just tied yourself to an anchor. The media will eat this alive. A fake marriage to a maid. I’m going to tear your company apart, brick by brick."
