Chapter 5: The Legal Warfare

By Thursday morning, the tension inside the Cole mansion was thick enough to cut with a knife. Julian Vance had officially fired his first warning shot. A local tabloid website published a scathing, anonymous article hinting at a scandal within the Cole empire: “Billionaire Ethan Cole Harbors Illegal Fugitive in Nashville Mansion.”
The stock prices of Cole Enterprises took a minor dip, but Ethan didn't care about the money. His public relations team was working overtime to suppress the article, but on social media, the rumor was already spreading like wildfire. Users were demanding answers, and paparazzi were beginning to camp outside the estate's massive iron gates.
Inside, Maria was a nervous wreck. She refused to let Sophia near the windows. Every time a car drove past the perimeter, she panicked, thinking it was the authorities coming to rip her daughter from her arms.
"Ethan, please," Maria begged as they sat in the war room he had set up in his study. "Just drop the charges against Marcus. Give Julian the money. It's just money to you, but it’s my life to me."
Ethan looked up from a mountain of legal documents, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. "Maria, if I give in to blackmail now, Julian will never stop. He will use you as a leverage tool against me for the rest of our lives. If I give him five million today, he’ll ask for fifty million next year. We have to cut the head off the snake."
Just then, Ethan’s chief legal counsel, a sharp, formidable woman named Diana Vance (no relation to Julian), entered the room. Her expression was grave.
"Ethan, we have a problem," Diana said, placing a tablet on the desk. "Julian didn't wait until Friday. He officially filed a petition with the family court this morning, contesting Maria's parental fitness based on her legal status. He’s arguing that because she is facing imminent deportation, the child is in danger of abandonment, and he's requesting emergency temporary custody of Sophia to be placed in a state facility until the matter is resolved."
"He's doing what?!" Ethan roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table, shattering a glass coaster.
"It’s a psychological tactic," Diana explained calmly, though her eyes showed deep concern. "He knows it will break Maria. He knows it will force your hand. The judge signed an order for an emergency hearing tomorrow morning at nine. If we don't show up with an ironclad defense, the court could actually order a social worker to remove Sophia from this house temporarily."
Maria let out a heart-wrenching scream, covering her face as she sobbed. Sophia, hearing her mother's cry from the hallway, ran into the room, holding her purple crayon. "Mommy? Why are you crying? Is the bad man coming back?"
Maria grabbed Sophia, holding her so tightly that the little girl gasped. "No, sweetie. No, Mommy is just... Mommy loves you so much."
Ethan stood up and walked over to them. He knelt down, wrapping his large arms around both of them. The vulnerability he felt was terrifying. He had spent his whole life controlling every variable, calculating every risk. But love wasn't a calculation. It was a chaotic, beautiful, and agonizingly vulnerable thing.
"Diana," Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet as he looked at his lawyer over Maria’s shaking shoulder. "What is the fastest, most absolute way to grant Maria legal residency and protect Sophia under my name?"
Diana sighed heavily. "Legally? A green card marriage takes months, sometimes years to process under normal circumstances. But... if you were to legally adopt Sophia, and if Maria was married to a prominent U.S. citizen with significant political influence, we could fast-track an emergency adjustment of status based on extreme hardship and national economic interest. But Ethan, a marriage of convenience under this kind of scrutiny will be dissected by the feds. They will look for any sign that it’s fake."
Ethan looked at Maria. He saw the woman who had brought light into his dark, empty soul. He saw the mother who would die for her child. He didn't see a marriage of convenience. He saw the only future he ever wanted.

"It won't be a fake marriage," Ethan whispered, looking directly into Maria's tear-filled eyes. "Because I love you, Maria. I have loved you since the day you brought color back into this house."
Maria stared at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. In the middle of the darkest storm of her life, a ray of pure, blinding light had just broken through. But would the court believe them, or would Julian’s trap snap shut before they could even say "I do"?
