Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

The helicopter lifted off, carrying Marcus Sterling and his shattered legal ambitions back down the mountain toward an inevitable federal trial.
The silence returned to the mountain sanctuary, deeper and more profound than before.
Judge Vance remained standing in the clearing, watching the helicopter disappear over the granite peaks. Then, she turned around, walked slowly up the wooden steps of the porch, and stopped right in front of Arthur, Nell, and Nora.
She looked down at the two little girls, who were still clutching each other's hands, their big eyes staring up at her with cautious uncertainty.
"Eleanor. Nora," Judge Vance said softly, her stern courtroom demeanor completely melting away into a warm, gentle smile. "How are you holding up?"
"We're okay," Nell said, stepping slightly in front of Nora to protect her. "Are you going to take us back to the dark room?"
"Never," Judge Vance said firmly, kneeling down so she was at eye level with them. "In fact, I'm here to deliver a very different kind of verdict."
She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a clean, crisp sheaf of legal papers tied with a blue ribbon. She handed them up to Arthur.
Arthur took the papers, his hands trembling slightly as his eyes scanned the text.
Petition for Permanent Guardianship and Adoption. Petitioner: Arthur Whitmore. Respondent: The State / Sterling Estate. Status: Approved and Executed by Order of the Federal Circuit Court.
Arthur looked up, stunned, his breath catching in his throat. "Judge Vance... I don't understand. How is this possible?"
"When you left your phone on the kitchen counter, Professor, you also left your entire digital history," Judge Vance said, standing up and brushing snow from her robe. "Every book you ever wrote, every student you ever mentored, every community service record, and every neighborhood report about the kind of man you are. The state reviewed your case within twelve hours. Furthermore, the remaining independent members of the Sterling board voted unanimously to strip Marcus of all guardianship rights and place the girls' trust directly under a protected, independent foundation—with you as their legal guardian."
Judge Vance smiled warmly, placing a hand on Arthur’s shoulder. "The law doesn't just protect bloodlines, Arthur. Sometimes, it recognizes a home when it sees one."
Nell looked up at Arthur, her enormous eyes shining with unshed tears. "Does this mean... we don't have to leave?"

Arthur dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around both Nell and Nora, pulling them tightly against his chest. A single tear escaped his eye and tracked warm down his cheek.
"No, my loves," Arthur whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You never have to leave. You are home."
