Chapter 10 - The Warm Kitchen

Six months later.
The snow had long since melted from the mountain passes, replaced by a lush, vibrant green canopy of pine trees and blooming wildflowers.
Down in the valley, the old house on Juniper Street had undergone a complete transformation. The faded blue door was freshly painted a bright, welcoming azure. A brand-new wooden swing hung from the old oak tree in the front yard, and flower beds filled with colorful tulips lined the pathway.
Inside the kitchen, the kettle was whistling merrily on the stove, sending plumes of sweet-smelling steam rising into the bright afternoon air.
At the wooden dining table sat two seven-year-old girls—though they still looked identical in every possible way, their faces were no longer pale and haunted by fear. They were glowing with health, their cheeks rosy and bright, bent over a massive box of colorful crayons and a stack of white drawing paper.
"Arthur! Look!" Nora shouted happily, holding up a crayon drawing. "I drew the train!"
Arthur walked out of the living room, a stack of history books balanced in his arms. He looked down at the drawing. It showed a big black train moving through a snowy mountain, led by a tall stick figure wearing a very large woolen scarf, flanked by two small figures holding hands.
"That's a masterpiece, Nora," Arthur smiled, setting his books down and pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
"And look at mine!" Nell chimed in, holding up her own drawing. It showed the house on Juniper Street, complete with a bright yellow sun, a smiling blue door, and three figures standing together on the porch, never to be separated again.
Arthur felt his heart swell—strong, steady, and full of life, beating with a purpose he never knew he was capable of fulfilling.
The front doorbell rang—a bright, cheerful chime that echoed through the cozy rooms.
Nell and Nora scrambled down from their chairs, racing toward the front door. Nell flung the door wide open.
There was no black limousine at the curb. No cold corporate thugs. No dark shadows waiting in the snow.

There was only the warm afternoon sunshine, the sound of birds singing in the trees, and a future stretching out before them—bright, endless, and entirely their own.
"Welcome home, girls," Arthur said, smiling as he walked up behind them, wrapping his arms gently around their shoulders as they stepped out together into the golden light.
