Chapter 8 - The Memorial Fishing Trip

As the one-year anniversary of Robert’s passing approached, the family decided to honor his memory the way he would have wanted: not with a somber, weeping gathering in a black church, but with a weekend fishing trip out on the Ashley River, right where Robert had taught all his grandchildren the fundamentals of casting a line.

Early Saturday morning, a flotilla of two rented pontoon boats glided across the calm, glassy surface of the river. The morning mist was just beginning to burn off under the warm South Carolina sun, revealing a clear, brilliant blue sky.

Marcus, Chloe, their families, and our small household were spread across the decks. Cooler boxes were stocked with sandwiches, sweet tea, and snacks, and the air was filled with the easy chatter of family banter and children laughing.

Lily stood near the bow of the lead boat, wearing a bright yellow life jacket and holding the small, lightweight fishing rod Robert had gifted her on her seventh birthday. Daniel stood right behind her, his large hands guiding hers as she cast the line outward.

Swish.

The bright red-and-white bobber sailed through the air and landed with a gentle plop a few yards away from a patch of river reeds.

“Watch the float, Lily,” Daniel instructed gently, resting his chin near her shoulder. “If it dips below the surface, give a quick tug upward.”

“I’m watching, Daddy!” she declared with fierce concentration, her eyes locked onto the bobber.

From the second boat drifting alongside us, Chloe waved with a grin, holding up a camera to capture the moment. Marcus gave a thumbs-up from the helm.

For months, the legal battles and emotional fallout had weighed heavily on our shoulders. But out here on the water, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the low country marshes, it felt as though the healing process was finally complete. The poison that Evelyn had tried to inject into the family roots had been flushed out, replaced by transparency, accountability, and genuine love.

Suddenly, Lily’s bobber vanished beneath the dark water with a sharp jerk.

“It’s a bite! Daddy, it’s a bite!” Lily squealed, her face lighting up with excitement.

“Reel it in, steady and firm!” Daniel encouraged, laughing as Lily planted her boots firmly on the deck and turned the handle of the reel with all her might.

After a brief, thrilling struggle, a glistening brim broke the surface of the water, splashing droplets into the morning sun. With Daniel’s careful assistance, Lily swung the fish aboard, gently unhooked it following Robert’s exact instructions, and held it up proudly for everyone on both boats to see.

“I caught one! Just like Grandpa taught me!” she cheered, raising the fish triumphantly into the air.

Cheers and applause echoed across the river from both boats. I stood back by the cabin console, watching my husband and daughter share that radiant moment, and felt an immense wave of peace wash over me. Robert’s protection had held firm. The family was restored.
