Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Five years later, the bitterness of that Charleston living room felt like a distant, faded memory from another lifetime.
Lily was thirteen now, a bright, confident honor student with a passion for marine biology and competitive art. The education trust Robert had so carefully set up for her was fully operational, sitting securely in its designated account, waiting for the day she would walk onto a college campus.
Our home in Savannah was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the steady hum of family life. Chloe and Marcus remained our closest confidants and allies, and our extended family gatherings were regular, joyful affairs where every child—without a single exception—was celebrated, cherished, and loved for exactly who they were.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, Daniel, Lily, and I took a quiet trip back up to Charleston to visit Robert’s old workshop. We had spent the morning cleaning out the remaining shelves and organizing his old tools, preparing to convert the space into a permanent art and craft studio for Lily.
Lily, now a tall and self-assured teenager, stood by the garage workbench where Robert used to store his gear. Pinned neatly to the center of the wooden cabinet door, protected beneath a clear sheet of old plastic, was still the faded, colorful crayon drawing of a blue heron with a bright blue scarf that she had drawn when she was eight years old.
Daniel walked up behind her, resting his hands gently on her shoulders, smiling down at her with infinite pride.
“He always kept it right here, didn't he, Dad?” Lily asked softly, her fingers tracing the edge of the old cabinet frame.
