Chapter 5 - The Shadow Behind the Curtain

Two weeks later, the autumn leaves were falling softly across the city cemetery.
The church service had been canceled on that terrible day, but today, under a clear blue sky, a small, private burial was held. There were no cameras, no loud relatives, no fake smiles. It was just me, my brother David, Pastor Thomas, and little Emma, standing beside two small, pristine white marble headstones carved with the names Leo Vance and Toby Vance.
Pastor Thomas said a quiet, beautiful prayer, blessing the souls of my sweet boys as they were finally laid to rest in peace.
After the short service, David walked Emma toward the car to give me a moment alone.
I knelt beside the smooth white marble, placing two small woven grass bracelets onto the headstones—bracelets that Emma had made for her little brothers before the nightmare began.
"Rest peacefully, my sweet angels," I whispered, pressing my lips to the cold stone. "Mommy made sure no one will ever hurt you again."
"Mrs. Vance?" a voice spoke softly from behind me.
I stood up and turned around. Standing near the paved cemetery walkway was a young woman dressed in a quiet gray coat. She had dark circles under her eyes and was clutching a leather shoulder bag tightly against her side.
"Who are you?" I asked gently.
"My name is Elena," the woman said, her voice trembling slightly as she stepped toward me. "I... I was Evelyn’s personal secretary at the financial firm for three years."
My posture stiffened instantly. "If you're here to ask for leniency for her—"
"No!" Elena interrupted quickly, shaking her head. "No, God, no! I’m the one who left the comment under your blog post, Sarah."
I froze, staring at her in shock. "You... you were User_8831?"
Elena nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "Three weeks ago, Evelyn forced me to notarize the secondary trustee signatures on those insurance documents. I knew it was illegal, but she threatened to fire me and make sure I never worked in finance again. Then, when I heard the news that your twins had died in their sleep... I couldn't sleep. I knew what she had done."
Elena reached into her bag and pulled out a thick USB flash drive, holding it out toward me.
"What is this?" I asked.
"It’s three years of Evelyn’s hidden ledger books," Elena revealed softly. "Evelyn wasn't just trying to get rid of the twins for insurance money, Sarah. She had embezzled six million dollars from her late husband's family trust—money that was supposed to pass directly to you and Emma under your father-in-law's original, uncorrupted will."
I gasped, taking the drive from her hands.
"She knew that if you ever hired a private accountant during a divorce, you would discover the missing millions," Elena explained. "She poisoned the babies to force a mental breakdown, hoping you would be committed to an institution so she could gain total legal guardianship over Trevor and your estate."
The sheer depth of Evelyn’s depravity made my stomach turn. It wasn't just hatred or arrogance—it was a cold, calculated, multi-million-dollar financial cover-up rooted in decade-old greed.
"Why are you giving this to me now, Elena?" I asked.

Elena looked over at little Emma, who was sitting safely in David's car, waving out the window at us.
"Because I have a little girl of my own," Elena whispered. "And no mother should ever have to bury her children in the dark."
