Chapter 2 - The Poison in the Powder

The entire church went dead, suffocatingly silent.

The soft organ music abruptly cut out as the organist’s hands froze over the keys. The forty family members and friends seated in the pews stopped breathing. The light filtering through the stained-glass cross seemed to darken, casting long, eerie shadows across the altar.

Evelyn’s face instantly drained of all color. The haughty, arrogant smirk she had worn for years vanished, replaced by a mask of sudden, paralyzing terror.

"Emma, sweetheart," Pastor Thomas whispered, dropping to one knee beside the four-year-old, his brow furrowing in deep concern. "What are you talking about?"

Trevor took a quick step forward, his voice rising in panic. "Emma, stop talking nonsense! You're confused! Pastor, she's four years old, she doesn't know what she's saying—"

"I saw her!" Emma sobbed, her voice ringing clear and loud across the quiet sanctuary. She pointed a trembling, tiny finger straight at Evelyn. "I saw Grandma at her house last Friday night! I was supposed to be sleeping on the couch, but I got up to get water! Grandma was on the phone in the kitchen talking about the babies! She was mad! She said... she said she was going to fix everything so Daddy wouldn't be trapped!"

I froze on the floor near the side doors, my blood turning to pure ice in my veins. The pain in my bleeding head vanished, completely eclipsed by a wave of cold, apocalyptic horror.

"She put a white powder in the special bottles!" Emma cried, tears streaming down her chubby cheeks. "Just like the ones Mommy uses for the babies! She took a silver spoon and mixed it real good! I asked her what it was, and Grandma got real quiet. She gave me two chocolate cookies and said it was a secret game! She said Mommy and Daddy needed help with the babies, and that the babies would be much better off in heaven with the angels!"

A collective, shuddering gasp rippled through the congregation.

Evelyn lunged forward, her black lace gown rustling violently as her hands curved into claws. "YOU LITTLE LIAR!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice turning into a ragged, guttural howl. "Trevor, shut her up! Shut that wretched child up! She's lying! Sarah taught her to say that! Sarah made her lie to destroy me!"

"STAY BACK, EVELYN!" Pastor Thomas shouted, stepping boldly in front of Emma and placing his hands on the child's shoulders to shield her. "Do not step another inch closer to this child!"

Trevor stood frozen between his mother and the altar. His head turned slowly toward Evelyn, his eyes wide, unblinking, and filled with a horrific, sickening realization.

"Mom..." Trevor whispered, his voice shaking violently. "Mom... last Friday... you asked Sarah to give you six of the boys' pre-sterilized glass bottles so you could 'help prepare the formula'... Mom, what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything!" Evelyn screamed, her eyes darting frantically toward the back doors of the church. "They were ruining your life, Trevor! You had a brilliant career in finance lined up in Chicago! You were supposed to marry Lorden’s daughter! But you got her pregnant! Then she had twins! You were wasting your life buying diapers and paying mortgage payments on a house you couldn't afford!"

The entire family sat frozen in sheer horror as the confession spilled from Evelyn’s mouth like venom from a severed snake head.

"They were weak!" Evelyn shrieked, pointing her jewel-encrusted finger at my face. "Those babies were always sick! They were taking all your money! I did what had to be done to save my son!"

"YOU MONSTER!" I screamed, pushing myself off the floor with a roar of pure, primal hatred.

I charged across the altar, completely oblivious to the blood pouring down my face. I didn't see the church. I didn't see the pastor. All I saw was the woman who had murdered my infant sons in cold blood because they were an inconvenience to her selfish dreams for her son.

Before I could tear her apart with my bare hands, two of my uncles tackled me from the side, holding me back as I fought, screamed, and clawed at the air.

"Call the police!" Pastor Thomas bellowed to the deacon. "Lock the doors! No one leaves this sanctuary!"

Evelyn turned and tried to sprint toward the rear exit, but my brother and three cousins blocked the aisle, their faces dark with lethal fury. They seized her arms, pinning her against the heavy wooden pews as she kicked, bit, and screamed curses that shattered the sacred peace of the chapel.

Just as the sound of distant police sirens began to echo through the streets outside, Evelyn looked directly at me, a wild, psychotic laugh erupting from her chest.

"You think you won, Sarah?!" Evelyn cackled, her wig slipping sideways as she struggled against my brother's grip. "You think you know everything?! Check the comment, Sarah! Check the comment under your blog post from last night! You don't know a damn thing about what your precious husband was doing!"
