Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Mitchell

"Ethan, please, you have to listen to me!" Vanessa cried, tears of pure panic finally spilling over her flawless makeup, ruining the expensive mascara she had spent hours applying. She reached out to grab Ethan's hand, but he violently flinched away from her touch as if she were poison.

"Don't touch me," Ethan hissed, his teeth clenched so tightly his jaw ached. He looked at Vanessa with a mixture of disgust and utter disbelief. "How could you do this? How could any decent human being do this to another person?"

"I didn't know!" Vanessa pleaded, her voice rising to a frantic shriek. "I thought she was a trespasser! She was wearing rags, Ethan! Why would a billionaire dress like a beggar unless she was trying to trick us? She set me up!"

"She didn't set you up, Vanessa. She tested you," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a dangerously quiet whisper. "And you failed. Cruelly. Miserably."

Eleanor calmly reached into her damp canvas grocery bag. She pulled out a small, waterproof plastic pouch. Inside was her phone, its screen still glowing. She tapped the screen to stop the recording, then slid the phone into her pocket.

"Thirty minutes of high-definition footage," Eleanor murmured, looking directly at Vanessa. "From the moment I walked through the gate, to the moment you turned the hose on me, to the laughter of your guests. It’s all saved on a secure cloud server."

Patricia Mitchell stepped forward, her hands shaking as she tried to salvage what was rapidly becoming a social and financial execution. "Mrs. Carter, please. We are civilized people. We can settle this privately. The Mitchell family is about to merge with the Carters. We are partners—"

"Partners?" Eleanor laughed, a sharp, humorless sound. "My company, Carter Global, was preparing to underwrite your husband's logistics firm to save it from bankruptcy next month. The contracts are sitting on my desk in New York, awaiting my final signature."

George Mitchell looked as if he might faint. He clutched his chest, his face turning an ash-gray color. "Mrs. Carter... Eleanor, please. Without that underwriting, our creditors will liquidate everything by the end of the quarter. My family will be ruined."

"Then I suggest you start packing, George," Eleanor replied smoothly. She turned her head slightly to look at the young waiter who had tried to help her earlier. He was standing near the edge of the patio, looking terrified but holding his ground.

"What is your name, young man?" Eleanor asked, her tone instantly softening into warmth.

"L-Lucas, ma'am," the waiter stammered, swallowing hard.

"Lucas," Eleanor smiled. "You are the only person in this entire yard who showed a shred of human decency today. By Monday morning, you will receive an offer for a fully funded management scholarship at the Carter Foundation, along with a corporate position at our Nashville headquarters. I suggest you accept it. You are far too good to be serving champagne to monsters."

Lucas’s jaw dropped, his eyes filling with sudden, emotional tears. "Thank you... thank you so much, Mrs. Carter!"

Vanessa watched in horror as her entire world crumbled around her in a matter of minutes. The prestige, the wealth, the perfect wedding she had planned to flaunt to the world—it was all evaporating.

"Ethan, you can't let her do this!" Vanessa sobbed, throwing herself at him. "We love each other! We've been together for two years! You can't let your mother ruin our lives over a joke!"

Ethan looked down at his fiancée, seeing her clearly for the very first time. The beautiful, polished exterior was gone; all that remained was a shallow, cruel bully.

"It wasn't a joke, Vanessa," Ethan said, his voice cold and final. "And she didn't ruin our lives. You did."

With that, Ethan took off his engagement ring—a flawless five-carat diamond—and tossed it into the muddy puddle at Vanessa’s feet. He walked over to his mother, gently putting his dry jacket over her wet shoulders.

"Let’s go home, Mother," Ethan said.

Eleanor nodded, holding her head high as she walked through the crowd of silent, terrified guests. No one dared to laugh. No one dared to speak. The only sound was the wet, squelching noise of Vanessa’s designer shoes as she fell to her knees in the mud, desperately clawing through the wet grass to find the discarded ring.
