Chapter 4 - The Birth and The Trap

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, and flashing camera bulbs.

Over five hundred of the country’s most powerful figures were in attendance. I wore a stunning, custom-tailored navy silk gown designed specifically to complement my baby bump, with a diamond pendant resting against my collarbone.

For the first time in my life, I didn't feel like the shy, bruised foster girl hiding in the shadows. Standing beside Eleanor, holding my head high, I felt the strength of generations of Sterlings coursing through my veins.

As expected, around 8:30 PM, Julian made his entrance.

He looked terrible. His suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wildly searching the room until they landed on me. He pushed past two waitresses, storming toward the raised platform where Eleanor and I stood talking to the Governor.

"Clara!" Julian shouted, his voice cutting through the classical violin music.

The room went dead silent. Cameras immediately swung toward him, flashbulbs exploding like gunfire.

Security moved to block him, but Eleanor held up a single hand, signaling them to let him speak.

Julian stopped ten feet away, breathing heavily. He tried to adjust his jacket, attempting to put on his old, charming facade for the surrounding news cameras.

"Clara... please," Julian said, his voice dripping with rehearsed emotion. "You don't have to do this. I know your mother is controlling you! She’s using her money to drive a wedge between us! I am the father of your child! We belong together!"

I took a step forward, looking down at him from the platform.

"You didn't care about this baby when you paid Judge Carter three million dollars to leave me homeless, Julian," I said, my voice amplified by the microphone near the podium.

The crowd gasped. Julian’s face paled.

"You didn't care about this baby when you told me I came from nothing and was going back to nothing," I continued smoothly, every word hitting him like a physical blow. "You don't want your son, Julian. You want his grandfather's money. You want my mother's trust fund."

"That's a lie!" Julian shrieked, losing his composure completely as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "I have rights! I will drag you through every family court in this country! I will make sure you never see a dime until you give me my share of that child's estate!"

"You won't be dragging anyone anywhere, Mr. Vance," a stern voice echoed from the main entrance.

Four federal agents in suits stepped into the ballroom, flanked by two city detectives.

Special Agent Miller walked straight up to Julian, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Julian Vance," Agent Miller announced loudly for every news camera in the room to hear. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, judicial corruption, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit tax evasion."

Julian backed away frantically. "What?! On what evidence?!"

"On the evidence provided by your own corporate accountant, whom you haven't paid in three months," Alexander Vance stepped forward, holding a tablet. "He turned over your complete double-entry bookkeeping ledgers two hours ago. You didn't just bribe Judge Carter—you’ve been running an illegal money-laundering scheme through your real estate firm for six years."

Julian looked around the room wildly, but every camera was recording his downfall, every billionaire and politician looking at him with utter disgust.

"No... no! Clara, help me!" Julian screamed as the agents grabbed his arms and snapped the handcuffs onto his wrists. "Clara! Tell them! We're family!"

As the marshals dragged a screaming, thrashing Julian toward the exit, a sharp, intense contraction shot through my lower abdomen.

I gasped, clutching my belly as my breath caught in my throat.

"Clara?" Eleanor rushed to my side, her eyes wide with concern. "What is it?"

I looked down. Warm liquid was pooling around my designer heels.

I looked up at Eleanor, a breathless laugh escaping my lips. "Mother... I think your grandson is ready to meet you."
