Chapter 3 - Julian’s Desperate Strike

By the next afternoon, the news had shattered the financial world like a mortar shell.
Every major news network, financial blog, and social media platform was blaring the same headline:
"FOUND HEIRESS: THE MISSING STERLING DAUGHTER REVEALED IN DRAMATIC COURTROOM RESCUE."
Side-by-side photos of Eleanor and me dominated every screen. The press ran stories highlighting the stark contrast between the ruthless Sterling matriarch and her long-lost daughter, who had spent years silently enduring the abuse of a mid-level real estate developer.
Meanwhile, Julian’s world was exploding.
From my comfortable armchair in the sunroom of the estate, Alexander Vance walked me through the wreckage of my ex-husband's life.
"As of 9:00 AM this morning, three major banks have frozen all of Mr. Vance’s commercial credit lines," Alexander reported, tapping his tablet. "His investors, realizing he is under federal investigation for judicial bribery, have pulled ninety percent of their capital from his upcoming residential project. He is officially insolvent."
"And Judge Carter?" I asked.
"Suspended without pay by the state bar, and currently being questioned by the FBI," Alexander smiled grimly. "He will likely spend the next five to eight years in a federal penitentiary."
I took a sip of fresh orange juice. A year ago, I would have felt pity. But after remembering how Julian smiled when the judge stripped me of my rights, how he leaned in to whisper that I was nothing, all I felt was a cold, righteous satisfaction.
Suddenly, Eleanor stepped into the sunroom, her phone in hand, her jaw set tight.
"He's panicking," Eleanor said, sitting down across from me. "Julian just tried to leak a story to the tabloids claiming that you are mentally unstable, that I am using my wealth to buy off the courts, and that he is fighting for emergency custody of your unborn child."
I stiffened, my hand automatically dropping to protect my belly. "Custody? He doesn't care about this baby! He wanted me to starve!"
"Of course he doesn't care about the baby," Eleanor said with a cold laugh. "He wants leverage. He knows that as the biological father of a Sterling heir, he could demand tens of millions of dollars in child support and settlement fees. He’s a parasite clawing at the wall because he knows he's about to drown."
"What are we going to do?" I asked.
Eleanor leaned forward, her icy blue eyes flashing with strategic brilliance.
"Tonight is the annual Sterling Foundation Winter Gala," Eleanor said. "Every major politician, judge, business mogul, and news camera in the state will be there. Julian thinks he can play a game of public sympathy in the press. We are going to give him a stage—and then we are going to destroy him completely."
"How?"
"Julian received an anonymous invitation to the gala an hour ago," Eleanor smiled wickedly. "His ego is so massive, his desperation so extreme, that he believes an insider is offering him a chance to negotiate with me directly. He will show up thinking he can blackmail us into a quiet settlement."

"And instead?"
"Instead, you will step out as the Vice Chair of the Sterling Foundation," Eleanor said gently, touching my cheek. "You will show the world who you are, Clara. And when he tries his desperate play, we will drop the hammer."
