Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The transition from the noisy, chaotic backyard to the quiet sanctuary of the grand Whitmore estate felt surreal.

The main manor was a sprawling estate of limestone, ivy-covered walls, and towering oak doors. It smelled of old library books, polished mahogany, and lavender. For years, Elena had only visited on forced holidays, enduring the icy stares of Vanessa and the condescending remarks of Richard, who always viewed David’s marriage to a "working-class nurse" as a stain on the family tree.

David had always told Elena, “Don't mind them, El. They're prisoners in their own golden cage.”

Sitting now in the expansive parlor while a housekeeper quietly poured chamomile tea, Elena felt the heavy weight of those memories. Mia was asleep upstairs in a room larger than their entire apartment, exhausted from the emotional roller coaster of the day.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Margaret walked in, moving slower now without the adrenaline of the public confrontation carrying her. She sank into a plush velvet armchair opposite Elena.

"You're angry with me," Margaret stated quietly, pouring her own cup of tea.

Elena looked up, meeting the older woman's gaze. "I'm overwhelmed, Margaret. You just detonated your entire family over an afternoon slight."

"It wasn't a slight. It was the culmination of decades of entitlement," Margaret sighed, staring into the dark amber liquid of her cup. "When David died... I failed him. I let you walk away with Mia, thinking you'd be safe from the vultures in this family. I should have protected you both sooner."

"We were fine on our own, Margaret," Elena said softly, though her voice lacked its usual defense. "I worked hard for every paycheck. Mia didn't need their ponies or gold cupcakes. She just needed love."

"I know," Margaret smiled gently. "And that is why she is the only heir I care about anymore."

Before Elena could process the gravity of that statement, the antique grandfather clock in the corner chimed loudly. The heavy front doors slammed open with a violent crash.

Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the grand hallway.

Richard burst into the parlor, his face red with fury, panting heavily as if he had run miles. Behind him stood Vanessa, trembling with rage, and Harrison Vance, looking deeply apologetic.

"This is insane!" Richard roared, slamming his hands onto the mahogany table, making the china rattle. "You can't just cut us off! We are your blood! You're letting a nurse and her brat steal everything we built!"

Margaret didn't even flinch. She took a slow sip of her tea, setting the cup down with a delicate click.

"Watch your tone in this house, Richard," Margaret said, her voice cutting through his rage like a scalpel. "You built nothing. You merely inherited the scaffolding of an empire my husband and I forged. And as for stealing... everything you possess was given to you at my pleasure. And now, by my pleasure, it is gone."
