Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

The next morning, the hospital room was locked down. At Daniel’s instruction, two of the hospital’s private security guards stood outside my door, preventing anyone without a direct medical badge from entering the floor.

"We need an attorney, Daniel," I said, my voice stronger now as I held Hope during her feeding. "We can't let them use their money to bury this. My mother has connections in the county courthouse."

"I’m already ahead of you, Claire," Daniel said, opening his laptop on the bedside table. "Your mother thinks she’s the only one who can pull strings in this city. But she forgot that I manage the physical infrastructure and security networks of the largest medical group in Oregon."

He turned the screen toward me, revealing a series of encrypted email threads and high-resolution video files.

"What is this?" I asked.

"This is your sister Melissa’s private medical file from the fertility clinic downtown," Daniel explained, pointing to a document dated three months ago. "And this is a series of financial transfers from your mother’s personal account to Dr. Aris Thorne—the clinical director of that clinic."

I squinted at the screen. "I don't understand."

"Melissa wasn't just infertile, Claire," Daniel revealed, his eyes dark with a cold, investigative focus. "She was never actually trying to get pregnant. The clinic files show she underwent a voluntary hysterectomy five years ago due to a severe medical condition. Your mother has been using Melissa's 'unexplained infertility' as a weapon of guilt to control her—and to justify targeting you."

"But why?" I whispered, my stomach turning. "Why would my mother want to force Melissa to raise my baby?"

"Because of your grandfather’s will," Daniel said, opening a second document. "I had our estate attorney dig up the original trust agreements from your grandfather, Arthur Sterling. The Sterling family trust dictates that forty percent of the family's multi-million-dollar real estate portfolio is locked in a sub-trust. That money only activates and transfers to Patricia's children if they produce a biological or legally adopted heir before the trust’s expiration date."

"And when is the expiration date?"

"Next month," Daniel said. "If there is no grandchild legally registered under the Sterling name by the end of the fiscal year, the forty percent reverts back to a national charitable foundation. Your mother didn't want Melissa to have a baby out of love, Claire. She needed a child to secure the Sterling fortune. And she chose your daughter to be the sacrificial lamb."

At that moment, the door to the room opened.

Our attorney, Marcus Thorne (no relation to the doctor), stepped in, carrying a leather briefcase. His face was grim.

"We have a problem, Daniel," Marcus said. "Patricia’s attorney has just secured a temporary emergency hearing with Judge Miller for tomorrow morning. They’re pushing for an expedited ruling on the custody petition before we can file the criminal assault charges."

"Then we don't wait for the court to find us," I said, my voice hardening as I looked at my daughter. "We bring the truth to the judge myself."
