Chapter 2 - The Breach

The front door didn't just open; the lock shattered as Daniel kicked it past my mother's blocking shoulder.

Within seconds, he was sprinting down the hallway, his work boots skidding on the hardwood. He burst into the kitchen, his eyes scanning the scene: the broken ceramic, the pool of fluid and dark blood on the floor, and me, curled in a fetal position with my hands frantically guarding my stomach.

"Claire!"

He was on his knees in an instant, his large hands cradling my face, checking my pulse, his eyes wide with a frantic, protective terror. "Oh god, sweetheart. What happened? What did they do to you?"

"My mother," I sobbed, clutching his shirt. "She hit me... she threw me. Daniel, the baby... she’s coming. It’s too early. There’s too much blood."

My mother appeared in the kitchen doorway, her expression instantly shifting from panicked to defensive. "She slipped, Daniel! She was being hysterical and she slipped. We were only trying to help her. She’s too fragile to carry this child, we were just discussing—"

"Shut up!" Daniel roared, turning on her with a fury that made even my father, who had remained silently paralyzed in his chair, flinch. "If you step one inch closer to my wife, I swear to God I will dismantle you."

He pulled out his phone, his fingers flying across the screen as he dialed 911. "This is Daniel Vance. I need an emergency obstetric transport to Portland Memorial. My wife is thirty-two weeks pregnant, experiencing severe abdominal trauma from an assault, and is in active labor with heavy vaginal bleeding. We need a Level 3 trauma team on standby."

As he spoke, my sister Melissa took a step toward us, her hands outstretched. "Daniel, please... let me help. I have blankets, I—"

"Get away from her!" Daniel snarled, shielding my body with his own.

Within minutes, the distant, wailing sirens of the Portland Fire & Rescue ambulance began to echo through the rainy streets. Daniel never left my side, his thumb gently wiping the tears and the swelling bruise on my cheek.

"You're going to be okay, Claire," he whispered, though his own hands were trembling. "I’ve got you. I’m not letting anyone touch you or our daughter."

As the paramedics burst through the front door, my mother tried to speak to them, her voice dripping with artificial concern. "It was an accident, officer! She tripped—"

"Save it, Patricia," Daniel said, his voice cold as ice as the medics lifted me onto the gurney. "Because the moment my wife and daughter are safe, the police are coming for you."
