Chapter 4 - The Illusory Kingdom

Thanksgiving Day arrived with a crisp, clear sky over Raleigh. The Halstead estate was lit up like a palace. Huge velvet-covered tents were erected on the expansive rear lawn, filled with ice sculptures, white linen tables, and brass quartets playing gentle classical music.

Over one hundred and fifty high-society guests—politicians, hedge fund managers, judges, and corporate executives—poured through the front gates.

Grant Halstead stood near the grand fireplace in the main ballroom, wearing a bespoke double-breasted tux. His hair was perfectly styled, a flute of vintage champagne held loosely in his right hand. Beside him stood Julianna Rhodes, wearing a emerald green silk gown that cost more than a teacher’s annual salary.

"You look like a king, darling," Julianna whispered, pressing her cheek against his shoulder as photographers from the local business journal snapped photos.

"This is just the beginning," Grant murmured back, taking a sip of champagne. "Once the ink dries on the merger tonight, we control the entire logistics corridor from here to Atlanta."

His father, Arthur Halstead, tapped a silver spoon against his champagne glass, drawing the room’s attention. The crowd hushed, turning toward the grand staircase where Arthur stood, looking down like a monarch.

"Friends, colleagues, distinguished guests," Arthur began, his booming voice filling the ballroom. "Today is a day for giving thanks. Thanks for family, thanks for prosperity, and thanks for the incredible future we are building together. Tonight, we celebrate not just a holiday, but a monumental union between Halstead Financial and Rhodes Logistics!"

The room erupted into polite, enthusiastic applause. Grant smiled broadly, nodding to the crowd, soaking in the admiration he felt he so richly deserved.

In the back row of the catering kitchen, however, the mood was vastly different.

The estate’s head butler, a man named George who had worked for the Halsteads for twelve years and had always been fond of Tessa, looked at his phone. He had received a private text message twenty minutes earlier from an unknown number.

Text: "George, please ensure the staff step away from the main administrative office in the west wing at 5:45 PM. Keep everyone in the main hall."

George didn't ask questions. He knew what Tessa had endured in that house. He quietly instructed the catering crew to remain focused entirely on the ballroom service and to avoid the west wing completely.

Outside the estate gates, four unmarked black vans pulled onto the shoulder of the road, their engines idling softly in the cool evening air.

Inside the lead van sat Tessa, wearing a tailored navy blue blazer, her hair pulled back into a slick, professional knot. Beside her was Federal Prosecutor David Mercer and Richard Vance.

"Everything is in place, Tessa," Mercer said, checking his watch. It read 5:42 PM. "The federal freeze orders on all Halstead domestic and offshore accounts went live five minutes ago. The state police team is ready to move."

Tessa looked out the window at the distant, glittering lights of the mansion where she had once bled herself dry trying to be the perfect wife, the perfect daughter-in-law, the perfect hostess.

"Let's go," she said softly.
