Chapter 2 - The Architect of Silence

The rain had turned into a steady, glaze-like sleet by the time Richard Vance’s black Lincoln pulled up to the Durham estate. Unlike the ostentatious, newly built mansion Arthur Halstead lived in, Richard’s house was a classic brick manor nestled among old-growth oaks, quiet and imposing.
Richard met her at the door himself. Dressed in a dark wool cardigan, his silver hair neatly combed back, he looked every bit the master investigator he had been for forty years. He didn't ask questions immediately. He took Tessa’s suitcase, ordered his housekeeper to prepare a warm bedroom for Hallie, and handed Tessa a steaming mug of black tea.
"You look exhausted, my dear," Richard said softly, gesturing toward the leather armchair beside a roaring fireplace in his study. "Sit. Warm up."
Tessa sat down, clutching the warm cup with both hands. The warmth penetrated her frozen fingers, but inside, her core remained dangerously cold. "Thank you, Uncle Richard. I didn't know who else to trust."
"You don't need to apologize," Richard said, taking the seat opposite her. "Arthur has spent twenty years raising Grant in his own image—arrogant, short-sighted, and convinced that money can buy silence. Grant thinks he's played a very clever move today. He thinks he can discard you, claim full custody of Hallie under the guise of your 'instability,' and keep the Halstead name spotless."
Tessa opened her tote bag and pulled out the gray paper folder alongside the small USB drive. "Grant doesn't want a divorce just because he fell out of love with me, Richard. He’s sleeping with Julianna Rhodes."
Richard’s eyebrows raised slightly, though he didn't look entirely surprised. "The daughter of Rhodes Logistics?"
"Yes," Tessa said, her voice dropping into a hard, professional register. "The merger between Halstead Financial and Rhodes Logistics isn't a standard corporate deal. Grant’s father is broke, isn't he?"
Richard leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Go on."
"I spent the last two months looking through the foundation's offshore tax filings while Hallie was sleeping," Tessa explained, opening the folder to reveal dozens of color-coded spreadsheets. "Arthur has been re-routing European investment capital through the non-profit arm to cover the losses in their private real estate portfolio. Grant knew. In fact, Grant signed off on the last four quarterly transfers as Chief Operating Officer."
She slid the USB drive across the oak table between them.
"That drive contains the original cryptographic tokens from the bank in Zurich," Tessa continued. "Grant thinks he wiped the server in the basement office three weeks ago. He didn't realize I kept an offline mirror on the home network."
Richard picked up the drive, holding it up to the light of the fire. A faint, razor-sharp smile touched his lips. "He thought you were just making biscuits and taking care of the baby, didn't he?"
"He thought I was stupid," Tessa corrected him simply. "He treated me like a ghost in his house. So I started acting like one. Ghosting through their files, ghosting through their accounts."
"Arthur and Grant are planning a massive Thanksgiving announcement three weeks from now," Richard said, his mind clearly working three steps ahead. "They've invited two hundred shareholders, political donors, and the state attorney general to the estate. They're going to announce the merger with Rhodes Logistics and elevate Grant to Chief Executive Officer. It’s supposed to be the coronation of the Halstead legacy."
"They're going to push the divorce through quietly before then," Tessa said. "Grant's lawyer already sent me a draft agreement by email while I was in the cab. They're offering me a small monthly stipend, contingent on a strict non-disclosure agreement and total surrender of joint property rights."
Richard tossed the USB drive lightly in his palm, then set it down beside his desk phone.
"Let them think you're scared, Tessa," Richard said, his voice laced with smooth, deadly confidence. "Sign nothing. Respond to nothing. Let Grant believe you're huddled in a cheap apartment somewhere, overwhelmed and broken. Let him build his little empire of straw."

"And what do I do?" Tessa asked.
"You stay here. You let my legal team handle your custody filings under seal," Richard replied. "And you help me build the financial case that will turn their Thanksgiving celebration into the largest corporate asset seizure North Carolina has seen in a decade."
