Chapter 6 - A Quiet Morning

Six months later.

The morning sun over Lake Michigan was soft and golden, casting long, peaceful rays across the newly restored estate. The marble foyer had been rebuilt, but this time, the cold white stone had been replaced with warm, dark oak, rich rugs, and bright landscape paintings selected personally by Nomi.

The house was no longer a fortress of silence. It was alive.

I stood in the kitchen at seven in the morning, dressed in a simple cotton shirt and trousers, watching the coffee maker drip into a glass pot.

The soft pad of bare feet echoed on the wooden floor behind me.

I turned around. Nomi was walking into the kitchen, wearing one of my white button-down shirts, her dark hair tossed casually over her shoulders. Her skin was radiant, healthy, and completely free of marks. The terrible bruises that had once broken my heart were nothing more than a distant, faded memory.

"You're up early," she said, her voice filled with a warm, sarcastic sweetness as she leaned against the kitchen island.

"I had a busy morning," I replied, stepping toward her with a warm mug in my hand. "The foundation’s new charity wing officially opened today. Your name is on the front archway."

Nomi blinked, a faint blush rising on her cheeks. "You didn't."

"I did," I smiled, setting the mug down on the counter and sliding my hands around her waist, pulling her flush against my chest. "Nomi Hayes has a nice ring to it, don't you think?"

She looked up at me, her brown eyes sparkling with mischievous delight. She reached up, adjusting the collar of my shirt with gentle, loving fingers.

"Are you asking me a question, Tristan Hayes?" she teased softly.

I pulled a small, velvet box from my trouser pocket and set it gently on the marble counter between us. I opened the lid, revealing a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the morning light like a burst of stars.

Nomi’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth, her eyes widening in pure shock and joy.

"No more favors," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion as I took her right hand in mine. "No more debts. No more dark rooms at two in the morning. Just you and me, for the rest of our lives."

Tears of pure happiness welled up in her eyes. She didn't look at the ring. She looked directly into my eyes—the eyes of the man who had torn down an empire just to keep her safe.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice strong and unwavering. "A thousand times, yes."

I slid the ring onto her finger, then pulled her up into my arms, spinning her around the sunlit kitchen as her laughter echoed through the open halls of the house.

The silence that had once defined my life was gone forever, replaced by the sweetest sound I had ever known: the laughter of the woman I loved, safe in the arms of the man who would protect her for eternity.
