Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Promise

The silence in the living room was heavier than the cold marble beneath our feet. I carried Nomi to the plush leather sofa as if she were made of spun glass, ignoring her quiet protests. She sat trembling, her small frame swallowed by my oversized gray t-shirt, her eyes fixed on the floor.
I knelt before her, keeping my movements deliberate and slow. Every instinct screamed at me to tear the city apart right now, but I forced the monster back into its cage. Nomi needed a protector tonight, not a tyrant.
"Permission to lift the hem, Nomi?" my voice was a gravelly whisper.
She swallowed hard, her chest heaving, then gave a faint nod.
With extreme care, I raised the edge of the shirt. In the soft golden light of the floor lamp, the full extent of the damage was laid bare. It wasn't just her upper chest. Four distinct, dark purple indentations circled her rib cage, trailing down toward her delicate waist. The skin was swollen, hot to the touch, and matted with matted shades of sickening yellow and deep green.
I felt a violent spike in my pulse. My fingers hovered a millimeter above her skin. I didn't need a medical degree to read this canvas; I had spent fifteen years in the Chicago underworld. This wasn't a clumsy struggle or a simple threat. This was a tactical, sadistically precise grip designed to break a person’s spirit without leaving marks visible under ordinary clothing.
"Two ribs are bruised, possibly hairline fractured," I murmured, my voice chillingly flat. "Who did this to you, Nomi?"
"Tristan... please," she whispered, a tear finally escaping her lash line and trailing down her bruised jaw. "If you touch him, he'll release the files. He'll ruin everything your father built. He'll ruin you."
I looked up from her waist, locking my eyes with hers. "Nobody ruins me, Nomi. And nobody touches what is mine."
"I'm not yours!" she choked out, her voice cracking with a painful mix of defiance and fear. "I'm just a favor! A ghost staying in your guest house because my brother owed you money before he died!"
"You were a favor three months ago," I said, leaning in until she could feel the heat radiating off my face. "Now you are the only reason I still remember I'm human. Tell me his name."
She pulled her lips into a thin line, shaking her head violently. But her silence was already an answer. Nomi worked as a senior curator at the Hayes Cultural Foundation—the legitimate art empire I used to launder our political clout. Only three men in that building had the authority to back her into a corner without fearing security.
I stood up slowly, reaching into my back pocket for my encrypted phone. I dialed a single number.
"Boss?" Marcus’s deep voice cut through the line on the second ring.
"Bring the car around. Front entrance. Five minutes."
"Who are we taking, Boss?"
I stared down at Nomi, watching her clasp her hands together over her chest, trying desperately to cover the marks of her trauma.
"Julian Vance," I said into the speaker. "And bring the heavy toolkit."
On the sofa, Nomi gasped, her face draining of what little color remained. "Tristan, no! Julian is connected to the District Attorney! He's the chairman of the board!"

I slipped the phone back into my pocket and knelt back down in front of her. I took her small, cold hand in mine, wrapping my thick fingers around hers with a gentle firmness that promised absolute security.
"Julian Vance can be the President of the United States for all I care," I whispered, pressing my lips gently to the top of her bruised knuckles. "Tonight, he learns what happens when you lay a hand on my world."
