Chapter 6 - The View from the Top

At 4:00 PM, the Grand Ballroom was packed with over two hundred journalists, news cameras, and panicked hotel board members.

Julian Sterling sat in the front row, sipping ice water, a triumphant, sickening smirk plastered across his face. He watched the stage, waiting for Silas Wentworth to step up to the podium and announce his surrender.

The side doors opened.

It wasn't Silas who walked onto the stage.

It was me.

I wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress, my hair pinned back, my head held high. I didn't look at the flashing cameras. I didn't look at the shouting journalists. I walked straight to the podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked directly into the center news camera.

A sudden, shocked hush fell over the room.

"My name is Wren Miller," I said, my voice echoing clear and strong through the speakers. "Six weeks ago, I was a twenty-four-year-old housekeeper earning fourteen dollars an hour, living in fear of a violent man who told me I was worthless."

Julian Sterling leaned forward, his smirk instantly faltering.

"The newspaper article published today claims that Silas Wentworth used his power to exploit me, to hide crimes, and to pay for my silence," I continued, holding up a sleek black USB drive in my hand. "That is a lie."

I looked at Julian, holding his gaze with absolute defiance.

"Silas Wentworth saved my life," I announced proudly, my voice ringing with unshakable authority. "When my abuser struck me, Silas put him in prison. When I had nowhere safe to sleep, Silas gave me the key to his own home. And when a corrupt board member named Julian Sterling offered two hundred thousand dollars to a fired supervisor to falsify security logs and destroy this hotel, Silas Wentworth chose to lose his entire fortune rather than let my name be dragged through the mud."

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Journalists scrambled forward, flashbulbs exploding like fireworks.

"On this drive," I shouted over the noise, setting the USB on the podium, "are the original, unedited 4K security feeds from Cook County police, the bank statements proving Julian Sterling's offshore bribes, and the full confession of Arthur Vance. Silas Wentworth didn't break the law. He broke the man who tried to destroy this hotel."

I stepped back from the podium, turning toward the backstage curtain.

Standing in the wings, his eyes wide with disbelief and overflowing love, was Silas.

He didn't care about the cameras. He didn't care about the board members who were already surrounding Julian Sterling with police officers entering the back doors. He walked straight onto the stage, caught me in his arms, and lifted me off my feet, pulling me into a fierce, breathless kiss in front of every news camera in Chicago.

The crowd went wild, flashbulbs blinding the stage, but to us, the room had completely vanished.

One year later.

The snow was falling gently over Lake Michigan, dusting the glass windows of the 47th floor in soft white.

I stood in the center of the living room, wearing a simple white silk gown, looking out at the city lights. Behind me, soft classical music played from the grand piano, and the warm scent of fireplace oak filled the air.

Strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Silas rested his chin on my shoulder, pressing a soft kiss against my neck.

"Are you ready, Mrs. Wentworth?" he whispered softly into my ear.

I turned in his arms, smiling as I looked up into the pale blue eyes of my husband.

We had been married an hour ago in a private ceremony right here in the suite, surrounded by Mrs. Gable, a few trusted friends, and the quiet beauty of the city skyline.

Silas had retained his position as Chairman of Wentworth Holdings, while Julian Sterling was currently serving an eight-year sentence in federal prison for securities fraud. But Silas no longer spent eighteen hours a day in his office. He had learned how to live, how to laugh, and how to leave his work on the 46th floor.

He reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a heavy velvet box.

"I have a wedding gift for you," he said gently, popping the latch open.

Inside rested a gold key, intricate and beautifully crafted, engraved with four simple words: OUR HOME, FLOOR 47.

"I thought I already had a key," I teased softly, wrapping my arms around his neck.

"That was the key to my hotel, Wren," Silas said, looking at me with a love so deep and eternal it brought sweet tears to my eyes. "This is the key to my life. It’s yours. Forever."

I took the gold key, holding it tightly against my chest, and leaned up to kiss the man who had turned my darkest night into a lifetime of light.

High above the noise of the city below, the maintenance door was finally locked, the safe room was wide open, and the view from the top floor had never been more beautiful.
