Chapter 4 - The Gala of Snakes

Three weeks passed in a blur of quiet routine and intense transformation.

My jaw healed completely, leaving no trace of the violence Marcus had inflicted. Under Mrs. Gable's sharp but maternal tutelage, I adapted to my new role with surprising ease. I organized Silas’s extensive personal library, coordinated his private dining, managed the high-profile security rosters for his floor, and ensured his daily life ran with military precision.

Working closely with Silas, I began to see the man behind the terrifying reputation.

He worked eighteen hours a day. He slept rarely, often pacing the living room at two in the morning, staring out at the lake with a glass of neat bourbon in his hand. He was brilliant, ruthless in business, but possessed an unyielding sense of honor. He treated the hotel’s lower-level staff with far more respect than he offered the billionaires and politicians who frequented the 45th-floor executive lounges.

And slowly, subtly, the cold barrier between us began to melt.

It started with small things. A shared cup of coffee at six in the morning before his meetings. A brief smile when I found a lost 19th-century manuscript he had been searching for. The way his pale blue eyes would soften whenever I walked into the room, tracking my movements with an intensity that made my skin tingle with a strange, breathless anticipation.

I was falling for him. It was dangerous, reckless, and entirely forbidden—a housekeeper loving an empire builder. But I couldn't stop it.

Then came the annual Wentworth Foundation Gala.

It was the biggest charity event of the year in Chicago, held in the hotel's famous Grand Ballroom on the main level. The city's elite—politicians, real estate moguls, foreign investors, and socialites—gathered to drink champagne and donate millions.

At 7:00 PM, I stood in my room on the 47th floor, staring at the dress Silas had sent to my quarters an hour earlier.

It was a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown, sleeveless, with a tasteful cowl neckline and a low back that brushed against the curve of my spine. Beside it was a box containing simple diamond stud earrings.

A knock sounded at my door.

I opened it to find Silas standing in the hallway, wearing a black velvet tuxedo that made him look impossibly handsome and lethally sophisticated.

He stopped, his breath catching visibly as his eyes swept over me. For a long, silent moment, the powerful titan of Chicago business simply stared at me, his pale blue eyes burning with an unmasked, primal admiration that made my heart leap into my throat.

"Wren," he murmured, his voice husky. "You're... stunning."

"The dress is incredible, Silas," I whispered, my cheeks flushing warm. "But... why do you need me down there? Mrs. Gable said this is an exclusive event for board members and donors."

Silas stepped closer, offering me his arm.

"Julian Sterling is attending tonight," Silas said, his voice instantly turning cold and sharp.

The name hit me like a cold splash of water. Julian Sterling was the chief financial investor behind Wentworth Holdings—and Silas’s fiercest rival on the board of directors. He was a corrupt, arrogant billionaire who had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of the hotel chain for six months.

"Julian believes he owns every room in this city," Silas continued, his arm firm beneath my hand as we walked toward the elevator. "He has been spreading rumors among the board that I have become erratic, that I’m hiding away on the 47th floor because I’ve lost my grip on the business. Tonight, I am stepping back into the light. And I want you by my side."

"As what?" I asked, my heart pounding.

Silas looked down at me, his expression softening into something raw and fiercely protective.

"As the woman who holds the key to my floor," he said softly. "And the only person in this building I actually trust."

The elevator doors opened into the Grand Ballroom.

The room was a dizzying sea of glittering chandeliers, live orchestral music, and hundreds of people dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns. As Silas entered the room with me on his arm, a hush fell over the immediate crowd. Whispers rippled through the room like wildfire.

“Is that Wentworth?” “Who is the girl in green?” “I thought he never attended these events...”

Silas navigated the room with effortless power, introducing me simply as his Chief Residential Executive. His grip on my hand was warm, grounding me amidst the overwhelming flash of photographer cameras.

Then, a tall man with slicked-back gray hair, a heavy gold watch, and a sneering, arrogant smile blocked our path.

Julian Sterling.

"Silas!" Julian declared loudly, holding a glass of champagne. "The ghost of the 47th floor finally descends to join the commoners! We were beginning to think you’d retired."

"Julian," Silas replied smoothly, his tone icy enough to freeze the champagne in Sterling's glass. "I see you're still wasting the board's money on vintage private reserves."

Julian’s eyes flicked over to me, scanning my gown, my face, and finally resting on the diamond earrings. A slow, predatory smile spread across his face.

"And who is this exquisite creature?" Julian asked, stepping closer and reaching out to take my hand. "I didn't realize you were bringing a guest, Silas. She doesn't look like the usual corporate lawyers you surround yourself with."

Before Julian’s fingers could touch my skin, Silas stepped directly into his path, his broad shoulders completely blocking me from Julian’s sight. The air around us turned deadly.

"Touch her," Silas whispered, his voice dangerously low, "and I will buy out your remaining six percent of Wentworth shares before midnight and have security throw you into the river."

Julian’s smile instantly vanished. He took a hasty step back, his eyes widening in shock at the absolute, murderous fury radiating from Silas.

"You're insane, Wentworth," Julian spat, trying to cover his fear with bravado. "She’s just a girl!"

"She is mine to protect," Silas growled, turning his back on Sterling and pulling me gently away toward the terrace glass doors.

My chest heaved. My skin was tingling with a wild, intoxicating electricity. I looked at Silas as we stepped out onto the quiet, breezy balcony overlooking the river.

"Silas..." I breathed, looking up at his sharp profile.

He turned to face me, the moonlight reflecting in his pale eyes. The icy, controlled businessman was gone. In his place was a man burning with a passion he could no longer suppress.

"I lied to you, Wren," Silas confessed, his voice trembling slightly as he stepped close, framing my face with his large, warm hands.

"About what?" I whispered, leaning into his touch.

"When I told you this was just a transaction," he murmured, his thumb gently brushing over the cheekbone where my bruise had once been. "I haven't slept a full night since the moment I found you in my bed three weeks ago. Every time I close my eyes, I see your face. Every time I look at that maintenance door, I thank God that lock was broken."

My breath hitched. "Silas..."

"I love you, Wren," he whispered against my lips. "Not as a savior. Not as a boss. I love you because you are the only light that has entered my life in ten years."

Before I could answer, he leaned down and pressed his lips against mine.

The kiss was deep, powerful, and brimming with a desperate, beautiful hunger. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, giving myself entirely over to the feeling of his strong hands holding me like I was the most precious thing in the universe.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, I smiled through tears of pure happiness.

"I love you too, Silas," I whispered. "I have since the night you told me I had a key."
