Chapter 4 - The Web Unravels

By noon, news of Ricardo Luján’s catastrophic downfall had rippled through Mexico City's high-society elite like wildfire.

Outside the luxury high-rise apartment building in Polanco, two large moving vans were parked near the grand entrance. Building security, strictly instructed by Camila’s legal team, stood at the glass doors, barring Ricardo and Beatriz from taking anything other than their personal clothing.

Inside the penthouse, Beatriz was hysterical, weeping as she threw her dresses into cardboard boxes. "How could she do this to us, Ricardo?! She tricked us! She acted like a nobody for three years!"

"Shut up, Mama!" Ricardo snapped, pacing frantically across the wide oak floorboards of the living room. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his phone was ringing constantly with calls from banking representatives, collection agencies, and furious former colleagues.

"We still have options," Ricardo muttered wildly, biting his thumb. "The two point four million pesos in the Santander account... my lawyer said we can file an emergency injunction claiming it was joint marital property! Once I get that cash, we can hire a top litigation firm and fight her for half of Horizonte Capital!"

Just then, his phone chimed with a high-priority email notification.

It was a formal summons from the Federal Tax Administration (SAT) and the Mexico City District Attorney's Office.

Ricardo’s blood ran cold as he read the document on his screen:

“NOTICE OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION: Mr. Ricardo Luján. Be advised that a financial audit submitted by Horizonte Capital Trust has revealed evidence of systematic tax evasion, fraudulent credit applications, and illegal asset concealment involving shell accounts registered under the name of Beatriz Luján. A freeze has been placed on all personal assets, vehicle titles, and domestic financial lines associated with your tax identification number.”

"No..." Ricardo whispered, dropping his phone onto the rug. "No, no, no!"

Three years ago, during their first year of marriage, Ricardo had taken out a massive eight-hundred-thousand-peso loan under his mother’s name to purchase an luxury sports car, falsely claiming on the bank forms that he owned fifty percent of Camila’s bakery business as collateral. He had quietly forged her signature on the guarantor documents, assuming she was just a simple baker who would never check corporate tax filings.

Camila hadn't just fired him. She had turned over three years of meticulously documented financial records to the federal prosecutors the moment she left the emergency room.

Outside the apartment building, the heavy doors opened, and two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Unit of the Federal Police stepped out of a marked vehicle, accompanied by Attorney Sofía Mercado.

"Mr. Luján!" the lead officer’s voice boomed down the hallway as they approached the penthouse suite. "Ricardo Luján!"

Beatriz shrieked, dropping a box of fine china that shattered across the marble foyer. "Ricardo! The police! Oh God, the police are here!"

Ricardo panicked. He darted toward the back terrace, thinking he could escape down the service stairs, but two security officers were already waiting at the rear exit.

Within seconds, the federal officers grabbed Ricardo, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Ricardo Luján, you are under arrest for commercial bank fraud, document forgery, and attempted tax evasion," the officer declared coldly.

"Wait! You're making a mistake!" Ricardo screamed, struggling wildly against the handcuffs as his mother wailed in the background. "It was my wife! Camila Torres framed me! She’s a multi-millionaire! She set me up!"

Sofía Mercado walked calmly into the foyer, holding a slim leather tablet. She looked down at the cowering, handcuffed man with cold amusement.

"Miss Torres didn't frame you, Ricardo," Sofía said smoothly. "She simply stopped protecting you from your own stupidity. Every document you forged, every lie you told to boost your credit score—she tracked it all. She gave you three years to show a shred of genuine love and respect. You chose to treat her like a servant. Now, you get to explain your choices to a federal judge."
