Chapter 2 - The Executive Mirage

At eight-thirty the following morning, the glass-and-steel headquarters of Grupo Nébula in Santa Fe was buzzing with activity. Ricardo Luján walked through the grand marble lobby, adjusting his crisp Italian silk tie and holding a fresh cup of artisan coffee. He held his head high, greeting junior analysts with an air of absolute superiority.
In his mind, he was the untouchable star of the corporation—the brilliant regional director who kept the multi-billion-peso logistics conglomerate running smoothly.
He took the private executive elevator to the forty-second floor and walked into his corner office. Waiting inside was his mother, Beatriz, sitting comfortably in his leather armchair, sipping tea from a delicate fine-bone porcelain cup she had brought from home.
"Did you fix the bank issue, Ricardo?" Beatriz demanded, setting the cup down on his mahogany desk with an annoyed click. "The boutique in Interlomas declined my card this morning when I tried to buy that cashmere coat. It was utterly embarrassing!"
"Don't worry, Mama," Ricardo said smoothly, sitting behind his desk and opening his laptop. "Camila is just throwing a temper tantrum because I didn't rush to her bedside over a minor leg scrape. She thinks freezing the account will make me crawl back to her. But she forgets who brings the real status to this family. My annual performance bonus from Grupo Nébula clears next week. It’s worth over three million pesos. Once that hits my private account, she can keep her little bakery pennies."
Beatriz sighed heavily, applying a fresh layer of red lipstick. "I told you from day one that girl was beneath us. A baker! Her hands always smelled like flour and yeast. You should have married the daughter of Don Héctor. Now look at us—having our morning ruined because she couldn't manage to throw together a light chicken broth before falling over her own feet."
Before Ricardo could reply, the heavy double doors of the executive boardroom across the hall swung open. Arturo Beltrán, the formidable Global CEO of Grupo Nébula, stepped out, surrounded by four external forensic auditors carrying thick black binders.
"Ricardo!" Arturo called out, his tone sharp and devoid of its usual warmth. "In the boardroom. Now."
Ricardo grinned at his mother. "Watch this, Mama. The CEO probably wants to discuss my promotion to Senior Vice President."
Ricardo smoothed his jacket, adjusted his cuff links, and walked confidently into the boardroom. But the moment he stepped inside, the atmosphere felt suffocatingly cold. The blinds were drawn, and a heavy projector displayed financial ledgers spanning the last thirty-six months.
"Sit down, Ricardo," Arturo commanded, pointing to a chair at the end of the long glass table.
"Mr. Beltrán, good morning," Ricardo said warmly, taking a seat. "If this is about the Q3 expansion metrics, my team has already—"
"This is not about Q3 metrics," Arturo interrupted, leaning forward and resting his hands on the table. "This is an emergency compliance audit ordered directly by our parent holding company’s board of directors."
Ricardo blinked, puzzled. "The parent holding company? Horizonte Capital? But they rarely intervene in day-to-day operations..."
"They intervened forty-five minutes ago," Arturo said coldly. "A red-flag advisory was flagged against your personal corporate expense account. Furthermore, we received a formal notice from Banco Santander stating that you attempted to execute an unauthorized multi-million-peso transfer yesterday using credentials linked to an entity associated with our core capital line."
Ricardo’s heart did a strange, violent flip inside his chest. Sweat began to form at the nape of his neck. "Mr. Beltrán, that... that is a private domestic matter! My wife had a minor accident and is attempting to cause financial confusion—"
"A minor accident?"
The boardroom door clicked open.
Standing in the doorway, supported by stainless steel medical crutches, was Camila. She was dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray wool suit, her hair styled in a severe, elegant bun. Her right leg was fully bound in a clean white cast, but her posture was regal, commanding, and utterly devoid of weakness. Beside her stood Attorney Sofía Mercado.
Ricardo froze, his jaw dropping in absolute shock. "Camila?! What the hell are you doing here?! How did security even let you up to the executive floor?"
Camila didn't look at him. She didn't grant him even a fraction of her attention. She walked slowly into the room, the rhythm of her crutches clicking against the polished marble floor like a countdown clock.

Arturo Beltrán immediately stood up from his chair at the head of the table. He bowed his head slightly in deep respect.
"Good morning, Chairwoman Torres," Arturo said softly. "The board is fully assembled on the secure video line, waiting for your instruction."
