Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in Court

Three months later, the sun shone brightly through the tall windows of the County Superior Courtroom.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. Beside me sat my mother, wearing a elegant dark blue dress, her hair neatly styled, looking healthier and stronger than she had in a decade. Her knee had healed significantly thanks to intensive physical therapy, and the color had returned to her cheeks.

At the defense table sat Derek, Melissa, and Evelyn.

Deprived of their stolen wealth, they were represented by court-appointed public defenders. Derek looked hollowed out—he had lost twenty pounds, his posture was slumped, and his eyes were dark with despair. Evelyn was sitting rigidly, facing multiple counts of third-degree assault and elder abuse.

The judge, a formidable woman with sharp gray eyes, slammed her gavel down.

"We have reviewed the forensic audit, the video and audio evidence, and the medical reports," Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The level of cold, calculated cruelty demonstrated by the defendants toward an elderly family member is utterly appalling."

The judge looked directly at Derek.

"Derek Vance, you abused a position of trust to systematically loot $148,000 from your mother's care fund. You attempted to fraudulently sell property that did not belong to you, and you subjected your mother to conditions that amount to psychological torture and neglect."

Derek kept his head bowed, weeping silently.

"On the charges of grand larceny, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit real estate fraud, you are hereby sentenced to six years in state prison," the judge declared.

Derek gasped, burying his face in his hands.

"Melissa Vance," the judge continued, turning her cold gaze to Melissa. "As an active co-conspirator who directly benefited from the stolen funds, you are sentenced to three years in state prison and ordered to pay full restitution."

"No! Please!" Melissa screamed, breaking into hysterical sobs as court officers stepped forward to put handcuffs on her. "It wasn't me! It was Derek!"

"Evelyn Miller," the judge concluded. "For the charge of physical assault on an elder, you are sentenced to eighteen months of community detention and 500 hours of mandatory elder care community service, under strict supervision."

As the officers led Derek and Melissa away in chains, Derek turned his head toward our bench.

"Mom! Iris! Please forgive me!" he cried out, his voice echoing down the hallway as the heavy metal doors closed behind him.

My mother took a deep breath. She didn't cry. She simply reached over, gripped my hand firmly, and murmured, "It is over."
