Chapter 10 - A Home Filled with Light

A year after my sudden return, we held a grand garden party at the house.
There were no fake investors, no cold champagne flutes, and no deceptive toasts. The lawn was decorated with warm fairy lights hanging from the old oak trees, acoustic live music floated through the air, and the tables were piled high with homemade comfort food.
Our guests were the neighbors who had welcomed my mother back, the legal team that had fought for us, police officers who had assisted in her rescue, and families who had been saved by my mother's foundation.
As dusk fell, painting the sky in shades of gold and violet, I stood on the teak patio, holding a glass of iced tea.
My mother walked up beside me, slipping her arm through mine. She looked radiant in a soft lavender dress, her silver hair catching the glow of the garden lights.
"What are you thinking about, my sweet girl?" she asked softly.
I looked at the grand, warm house behind us. Lights shone brightly from every window—from the spacious living room to the cozy sunroom. The laundry room was just a laundry room again, and the master bedroom upstairs was now a beautiful library and craft studio for my mother.
"I'm thinking about the day I walked up to that front door," I admitted, looking down at her. "I was so angry, Mom. My blood turned to ice when that woman told me the maid was in the backyard."
My mother smiled softly, resting her head against my shoulder.
"The maid isn't in the backyard anymore, Iris," she said quietly, her voice full of peace and deep contentment. "The queen of this house is right where she belongs."

We raised our glasses together under the evening sky.
The house was finally what it was always meant to be: not just a piece of real estate worth $600,000, but a fortress of unconditional love, justice, and impenetrable peace.
