Chapter 4 - The Unseen Frame

For the next forty-eight hours, Beth’s dining room became a command center.

Luke spent hours on his encrypted satellite phone, coordinating between Coast Guard legal officers, airport security directors, and Federal Aviation Administration liaison officers. Because the incident involved an active military officer and potential federal privacy violations on a commercial flight, Luke had access to resources Eric Dalton could never have imagined.

On Thursday morning—the day before the emergency custody hearing in Denver—Luke arrived at Beth’s house accompanied by a sharp-dressed woman in her late thirties carrying an iPad and a portfolio.

“Hannah, this is Lieutenant Commander Karen Mercer, one of our top digital forensics specialists,” Luke introduced her.

Karen gave me a warm, professional nod and set her iPad on the table. “Mrs. Miller, after Commander Callahan authorized a formal inquiry, we subpoenaed the high-definition internal cabin security footage from United Airlines Flight 412.”

She tapped the screen, bringing up a crisp, wide-angle video feed showing the interior of the Boeing 737 aircraft.

“This is the cabin camera mounted above row 10,” Karen explained, playing the video.

I watched the screen in awe. There I was, sitting in Seat 14B with Poppy on my lap. I saw Luke speaking to me, pointing toward the passenger holding up his phone across the aisle. Then I saw myself resting my head lightly on Luke’s shoulder.

“Now, look closely at Seat 12B,” Karen said, zooming in on a woman with sleek dark hair sitting two rows ahead.

It was Vanessa Sterling.

The video clearly showed Vanessa holding her phone up at an awkward angle behind her headrest, taking multiple photos of Luke and me.

“That proves she took the picture!” I said, my voice rising with excitement. “It proves it was staged!”

“It gets much better, Hannah,” Luke interjected smoothly. “Keep watching.”

Karen advanced the video by fifteen minutes. The cabin lights were dimmed as the plane reached cruising altitude.

The video showed Vanessa Sterling standing up to use the lavatory at the front of the cabin. As she walked down the aisle, she paused beside Seat 14A—where Luke was sitting.

Luke wasn't sleeping. In the security video, he looked up as Vanessa approached.

Then, something extraordinary happened on the screen.

Vanessa stopped. She looked at Luke, smiled familiarly, and leaned down to speak to him. Luke’s expression in the video turned instantly cold and stern. He pulled an official ID folder from his jacket, showed it to her, and pointed firmly back toward her seat. Vanessa’s smile vanished, her face turned pale, and she hurried back to her seat without another word.

I stared at the screen, my jaw dropping.

“Wait...” I looked from the screen to Luke. “You... you already knew her?!”

Luke smiled—a slow, brilliant, victorious smile.

“I didn't know her personal name at the time,” Luke explained softly. “But three days before that flight, my investigative team served a federal administrative subpoena on Eric Dalton’s logistics company in Denver as part of our port fraud investigation. Vanessa Sterling is the chief financial controller for Eric’s firm.”

I sat frozen in my chair as the sheer brilliance of the truth washed over me.

“When she walked past me on that plane,” Luke continued, “she recognized me as the Coast Guard officer who had signed the subpoena against her boss. She tried to approach me to ask if we could 'talk quietly' about the investigation. I showed her my federal credentials, warned her that approaching an investigating officer during transit was a federal offense, and ordered her back to her seat.”

“She didn't take that photo to expose a mother ignoring her child,” Karen added, tapping the screen. “She took that photo as black-market leverage to try to intimidate Commander Callahan into dropping the corporate fraud investigation against Eric Dalton! But when that failed, she and Eric decided to use it against you in family court instead!”

A wave of pure, unfiltered triumph surged through my chest.

Eric hadn't just staged a photo to steal my daughter. He had used a photograph of a federal military officer investigating his own company for financial crime—and fed it to the media.

“Pack your bags, Hannah,” Luke said, standing up and handing me a plane ticket. “We’re flying to Denver tonight. And tomorrow morning, we are going to show the judge what happens when Eric Dalton plays games with the law.”
