Chapter 3 - The Commander Steps In

Less than forty minutes later, a sleek dark blue SUV pulled up in front of Beth’s house, parking behind the reporters’ news vans.

The media cameras immediately swung toward the vehicle. When the driver’s side door opened, Luke Callahan stepped out.

He wasn't wearing his civilian coat today. He was in full Coast Guard Service Dress Blue uniform—gold stripes shining on his sleeves, his chest adorned with ribbons, his posture commanding and unyielding.

The reporters gasped, lunging forward with their microphones.

“Commander Callahan! Are you in a relationship with Hannah Miller?” “Is it true you used military aircraft to assist her?”

Luke didn't break his stride. He looked directly into the lead camera with an expression of cold, professional absolute steel.

“I am Commander Luke Callahan of the United States Coast Guard,” he said, his voice carrying clearly across the lawn. “The allegations being spread about Mrs. Miller are entirely false, defamatory, and absurd. I will be making an official public statement shortly, but right now, I am here on official personal business. Step back.”

The sheer authority in his voice made the reporters back away instantly.

Luke walked up the porch steps, and Beth opened the door immediately, pulling him inside before locking the deadbolt.

Luke took off his combination cover cap and tucked it under his arm. He looked at me, his blue eyes showing deep, genuine regret.

“Hannah,” he said softly, walking over to where I stood near the kitchen table. “I am so deeply sorry. My security detail dropped the ball on monitoring passenger photography. I had no idea this photo had been leaked to private gossip channels, let alone used against you.”

“It’s not your fault, Commander,” I said, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. “Eric was looking for anything to destroy me. If it wasn't you, he would have found something else.”

Luke sat down at the dining table, opening a thick leather briefcase he had brought with him.

“We are going to fix this,” Luke said firmly. “First of all, I’ve already contacted the Coast Guard Legal Service Command. My senior legal advisor is drafting an official, notarized military affidavit detailing the exact sequence of events on Flight 412. I am swearing under oath that our interaction was purely platonic, requested by me for operational privacy, and lasted less than three hours.”

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for days. “Thank you... thank you so much.”

“That’s only the beginning,” Luke continued, leaning forward, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully. “When my intelligence team ran a background check on the origins of that viral photo this morning, we discovered something very interesting.”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“The photo wasn't taken by a random blogger or a curious college student,” Luke revealed, pulling a printed digital audit report from his briefcase. “The metadata on the original digital image shows it was captured by an iPhone registered to a woman named Vanessa Sterling.”

The name hit me like a slap to the face.

“Vanessa Sterling?” I gasped. “That’s... that’s Eric’s new girlfriend! The woman he started seeing two months before our divorce was even finalized!”

“Exactly,” Luke’s smile was grim and cold. “Vanessa Sterling was on that flight, Hannah. She sat in Seat 12B—two rows ahead of us. She took that photograph deliberately, angled it to look like an embrace, and held onto it until Eric filed his emergency motion.”

My mind raced as the pieces of the trap slammed together. “They set me up. They knew I was flying to Baltimore, they booked Vanessa on the same flight, and they waited for any moment they could twist!”

“Yes,” Luke said softly. “But they made one fatal mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Luke leaned back, a dark, dangerous spark in his eyes. “They didn't know who I was. And they certainly didn't know what my team was capable of retrieving from that plane’s digital security logs.”
