Chapter 4 - The Legal Warfare

The battle that followed was swift, brutal, and utterly uncompromising.

With the evidence of the hidden camera footage, the forged Power of Attorney, the bank transfer logs, and Jade’s meticulous journals, my legal team—headed by Arthur Vance, a renowned senior prosecutor—launched a full-scale legal assault.

Two weeks after her arrest, Allison’s parents—wealthy, arrogant socialites from the upper-crust district—demanded a meeting at my lawyer’s office.

They arrived in tailored suits, looking down their noses at me as if I were a common criminal who had humiliated their precious daughter.

"Ryder," her father, Richard, barked, slamming his hand onto the conference table. "This circus has gone far enough! You have publicly disgraced our family name! Allison made a mistake... she was stressed! Taking care of an ailing old woman is exhausting!"

"She didn't make a mistake, Richard," I said, leaning across the table, my tone icy cold. "She committed multiple felonies."

"We are prepared to offer you a settlement," her mother, Evelyn, chimed in, holding up a designer handbag. "You drop the criminal charges, allow the divorce to proceed quietly without media coverage, and we will reimburse you for the money she took from your mother's account."

My lawyer, Arthur, chuckled softly, pulling a heavy blue folder from his briefcase.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," Arthur said smoothly, sliding the folder across the table. "I suggest you look at page four before you make any further generous offers."

Richard frowned, snatching up the folder and flipping it open. As his eyes scanned the documents, his face lost every trace of color.

"This is an indictment from the Federal Financial Crimes Division," Arthur explained calmly. "Your daughter and her associate, Julian Vance, have been formally charged with wire fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy. Furthermore, the State Attorney's Office has elevated the charges regarding Eleanor Ryder to Attempted Deprivation of Life through Criminal Neglect and Felony Assault."

"This... this is absurd!" Richard stammered, his fingers shaking as he dropped the papers. "You can't do this to her! She's thirty-two years old! You'll destroy her life!"

"She tried to destroy my mother’s life," I said, leaning in until I was inches from Richard's face. "She stole from a defenseless old woman. She beat a twenty-six-year-old girl who had no power to defend herself. Your daughter isn't going to a country club rehab, Richard. She is going to a state penitentiary."

"You monster!" Evelyn shrieked, tears ruining her heavy makeup. "What about her reputation?!"

"Her reputation was built on my money and her cruelty," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "The settlement offer is rejected. I will see your daughter in court."

Two months later, the trial concluded.

With Jade’s brave, calm testimony on the witness stand, supported by the undeniable, crystal-clear 4K video recordings played on giant screens in front of the jury, the verdict took less than forty-five minutes.

Guilty on all counts.

The judge, a stern woman known for her zero-tolerance stance on elder abuse, looked down at Allison with pure disdain as she wept hysterically at the defense table.

"Allison Ryder," the judge declared, her gavel echoing through the packed courtroom. "Your actions represent the absolute nadir of human cruelty. You abused a position of trust to torture a vulnerable mother and exploit an innocent worker, driven entirely by greed and malice. I sentence you to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first eight years."

As the bailiffs clamped leg irons onto Allison’s ankles and led her away in an orange jumpsuit, her eyes caught mine one last time.

She looked broken, hollowed out, and utterly defeated.

I didn't feel triumph. I didn't feel joy. I felt only a profound, quiet relief that the shadow hanging over my family had finally been lifted forever.
