Chapter 2 - Stripped Bare

Panic is an ugly thing when it catches up to a narcissist.

Allison’s face went through three distinct transformations in five seconds: shock, terror, and finally, vicious, unbridled rage.

"You spied on me?!" she screamed, her voice echoing down the stairwell. "You put hidden cameras in my home?! You sick, sick bastard! That is an invasion of my privacy!"

"This is my house, bought and paid for before I ever met you," I replied coldly, walking past her down the stairs. "And as of right now, you no longer have access to a single cent of my money."

I sat down at the dining table, opened my laptop, and logged into my master financial portal.

For four years, Allison had enjoyed an unlimited budget. She drove a luxury German SUV, wore designer clothes, and spent thousands every month at high-end spas. I had trusted her blindly, believing she was managing our household with love and care.

That trust was dead.

With a few swift clicks, I executed a total financial freeze. I removed her name from our joint credit accounts, revoked her supplementary cards, and transferred the liquid funds from our shared account into a protected corporate trust. I cancelled the lease on her luxury vehicle and flagged her personal accounts for fraud investigation due to the stolen pension funds.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. A loud notification pinged: Account Frozen. Then another: Credit Line Suspended.

Allison snatched up her phone, staring at the screen in utter horror.

"What did you do?!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into a frantic mess. "How am I supposed to pay for my things?! My car?! My cards?!"

"You can walk," I said, closing my laptop. "Or you can call your parents. But you will not spend another penny earned by my labor."

"I am your wife!" she roared, grabbing a glass vase from the sideboard and slamming it onto the floor, shattering it into a hundred sharp pieces. "You owe me! I gave you four years of my life! You left me alone here while you were playing engineer in the desert!"

"I was working to build a life for us," I said, standing up and towering over her. "You were abusing an old woman and an innocent girl. Pack your clothes, Allison. You have thirty minutes before the police arrive with a formal emergency restraining order."

"You're kicking me out?!"

"No," I corrected, stepping toward the front door. "I am purging you from this family."

Just then, two police cruisers pulled into the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the wet pavement.

Detective Sarah Miller stepped out of the lead car. She was a stern, sharp-eyed investigator with whom I had shared the encrypted video files two hours prior from the hospital.

When Allison saw the police officers walking up the steps, she suddenly dropped to the floor among the broken glass, tearing her own blouse and smearing a drop of blood from a tiny scratch onto her cheek.

"Help!" she wailed at the top of her lungs, putting on a performance that deserved an Oscar. "Help me, please! He's crazy! He came home from Saudi Arabia and attacked me! Look at what he did to the house!"

Detective Miller opened the front door, looking down at Allison sprawling on the floor, then looking at me standing calmly by the stairs.

"Mrs. Ryder?" Detective Miller asked, her tone devoid of any comfort.

"He hit me!" Allison sobbed, pointing a trembling finger at me. "He threatened to kill me! Arrest him!"

Detective Miller pulled a tablet from her tactical vest, tapped the screen, and turned it toward Allison. It played the high-definition security footage from fifteen minutes ago—showing Allison throwing the vase onto the floor herself, tearing her own blouse, and scratching her own face while I stood three feet away with my arms crossed.

"Mrs. Ryder," Detective Miller said, her voice dropping into an icy register. "You are under arrest for filing a false police report, felony elder abuse, third-degree assault, and grand larceny."

Allison’s weeping stopped instantly. Her jaw dropped.

"What... what?" she stammered.

Two officers stepped forward, yanked her up from the floor, pulled her arms behind her back, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

"You can't do this!" Allison screamed, thrashing wildly as they dragged her through the foyer. "Ryder! Tell them! Ryder, please! I'm sorry! I'll fix it! Ryder!"

I didn't say a word. I simply watched as the heavy front door swung shut behind her, cutting off her screams, leaving the house in complete, beautiful silence.
