Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

Two Days Later.
Adrian Vale stood at the head of the boardroom table at Vale Logistics, his chest puffed out with the supreme confidence of a man who believed he was untouchable. Today was the annual investor ratification meeting. If the board approved his new international shipping expansion, his personal net worth would triple, effectively clearing the hidden debts he had accumulated while trying to impress Celeste.
"Gentlemen, and members of the board," Adrian smiled, projecting a slide onto the massive screen. "The new routes through the North Atlantic corridor are fully secured. We have the capital, we have the clearance, and as majority shareholder, I am ready to sign the final executive order."
"You don't have the clearance, Adrian," a voice boomed from the back of the room.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom were pushed open by two security guards in custom black uniforms. Walking into the room was a man whose face had covered the front pages of the Wall Street Journal for three decades: Arthur Sterling, the reclusive billionaire titan of Sterling Global. Behind him walked my mother, Eleanor, looking like royalty in a tailored gray suit, and behind them both... was me.
I wore a sharp, sharp black blazer, my hair pinned back flawlessly, the exhaustion of childbirth completely masked by the fierce, cold resolve in my eyes.
Adrian’s projector clicker slipped from his hand, clattering onto the glass table. "Arthur? Mr. Sterling? What... what is the meaning of this? This is a private shareholder meeting."
"It is a shareholder meeting, Adrian," my father said, walking to the absolute head of the table. The current board members, men who usually acted like kings, immediately stood up, their faces pale with awe and terror. "But it's no longer your private meeting."
"What are you talking about?" Adrian stammered, his eyes darting to me, then to my mother. "Evelyn, what did you do? Who are these people to you?"
"Adrian," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor. "You always told me I was just a girl from a simple boutique background. You never asked about my maiden name because you were too busy looking at your own reflection. My name isn't Evelyn Vale. It's Evelyn Sterling."
The room went dead silent. One of the minority investors let out a sharp, panicked gasp.
My mother stepped forward, tossing a thick manila folder onto the center of the table. "Two days ago, you willfully withheld medical access, committed financial fraud by forging an estate transfer on a property bought with a Sterling family trust down payment, and stole heirloom jewelry valued at four hundred thousand dollars from our daughter's safe."
"That's a domestic issue!" Adrian hissed, his face turning an ugly shade of white. "The company accounts are completely separate! I own fifty-one percent of Vale Logistics!"
"You owned fifty-one percent, Adrian," my father corrected, pulling out a gold-rimmed pair of glasses. "But forty-eight hours ago, Sterling Global purchased the distressed debt of your primary lender, Apex Bank. We called in the short-term margin loans you took out to buy your mistress that villa in Aspen and that black Birkin bag she likes to flaunt. As of nine o'clock this morning, your shares have been legally seized as collateral."
Adrian sank into his chair, his jaw slack, his hands trembling violently against the glass table. "No... no, you can't do this. The expansion—"
May you like
"The expansion is approved," I said, leaning over the table and locking my eyes with his. "But you won't be the one running it. The board will now vote on your immediate termination as CEO. And as the new majority shareholder representing Sterling Global... I vote yes."
One by one, every single investor in the room raised their hand.
