Chapter 4 - The Final Promise

Three days later, the rain was pouring over Chicago, streaking the windows of Room 412.

Sarah’s condition had deteriorated rapidly. She was barely conscious, her eyes closed as the machines kept a slow, erratic tally of her final hours. Emily sat in the chair beside the bed, holding her mother’s hand, her small face pale with a silent, heavy grief that no six-year-old should ever have to carry.

I walked into the room quietly, carrying a small, plush bear I had bought in the lobby.

Emily looked up. When she saw me, she didn't smile. She simply let go of her mother’s hand, ran to me, and wrapped her small arms tightly around my waist. She buried her face in my coat, her little shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

"I don't want Mommy to go," she whispered, her voice breaking my heart into a million pieces.

I knelt down, wrapping my arms around her, holding her close. "I know, Emily. I know. But I promise you, whatever happens, you are never going to be alone again. I am going to take care of you."

I carried her back to the bedside. Sarah’s eyes slowly fluttered open. She looked at me, then at Emily, and a tiny, peaceful smile appeared on her lips. She didn't have the strength to speak, but she squeezed my hand one last time.

An hour later, the monitor let out a long, unbroken tone.

The nurses rushed in, but I gently guided Emily out of the room, holding her close to my chest as she wept. In that quiet, sterile hallway, as the rain beat against the glass, I made a silent vow to Sarah, and to myself: I will protect her with my life.
