Chapter 2 - The Dying Truth

"Emily, sweetheart," Sarah whispered, her voice barely louder than the hum of the oxygen machine. "Could you go down to the play area for just a little bit? I need to talk to the nice man."
"Can I show the nurse my shoes first?" Emily asked, bouncing on her heels.
"Of course you can, baby," Sarah smiled weakly, stroking Emily’s hair.
Emily grabbed her drawing and scurried out of the room, her new sneakers squeaking softly against the linoleum floor. I watched her go, a lump forming in my throat.
As soon as the door closed, I walked over to the bedside. Sarah reached out a frail, trembling hand. I took it, shocked by how cold and light her fingers felt.
"Thank you," she whispered, tears pooling in the corners of her eyes. "For the shoes. And for coming."
"Sarah..." I sat on the edge of the visitor's chair, the weight of the birth certificate heavy in my pocket. "My father... Marcus. How did this happen?"
Sarah let out a soft, bitter sigh. "When your mother passed away, I was lost. I was young, broke, and struggling to finish school. Marcus offered to help me. He said he wanted to look after his late wife’s family. But his help came with a price. He... he took advantage of my vulnerability, Michael. And when I got pregnant, his kindness turned to pure ice."
She closed her eyes, a tear escaping down her pale cheek.
"He told me if I ever spoke a word to anyone, especially to you, he would use his lawyers to declare me unfit and take the baby away. He gave me a choice: sign a non-disclosure agreement and take a small monthly stipend, or lose my daughter forever. I was terrified. So, I signed. I took Emily and moved to the edge of the city, living in hiding."
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked, my voice cracking with a mixture of grief and fury. "I would have helped you. I would have protected you."
"Marcus made sure I believed you were just like him," Sarah said, looking at me with deep sincerity. "He told me you were cold, ruthless, and that you would protect the Harrison name at all costs. But today... when Emily came back to this room, crying happy tears because a kind stranger bought her shoes so she wouldn't embarrass her mommy... she showed me your business card. I saw your name. And I knew I had to risk everything to tell you the truth."

She squeezed my hand with what little strength she had left.
"I am dying, Michael. The cancer has spread to my lungs. I have weeks, maybe days. Emily has no one. If the state takes her, she’ll be lost in the foster system. I don't want your money. I just want my daughter to have a family. Please... don't let Marcus's sins destroy her life."
