Chapter 6 - The Whispering Ghost

The raid on the Pilsen gambling den sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld. Luca Moretti's faction went into hiding, while Julian Vance realized his nephew was closing the net around him.

Back at the Millennium Tower, Brielle sat in the command center, staring at digital maps of the Gary rail yards. The data recovered from Ray's servers had unlocked a vast network of off-the-books shipping manifests dating back over a decade.

Matteo walked into the room, holding two cups of black coffee. He handed one to Brielle and stood beside her chair, looking at the screens.

"You haven't slept in twenty-four hours," Matteo noted softly.

"I can't sleep," Brielle replied, her gaze fixed on a row of archived transport logs from October 2015—the month Lily disappeared. "For eleven years, I thought she was dead in a ditch somewhere near Ashland. Now I'm looking at shipping numbers that might lead me to her real trail."

Matteo placed a hand gently on her shoulder. His touch was warm, solid, and grounding against the overwhelming noise in her head.

"We will track down every manifest, Brielle," Matteo said with deep conviction. "My organization has contacts across the country. If she was moved through Gary, we will find where that train stopped."

Brielle leaned her head back against his hand for a brief moment, letting herself lean on his strength. "Why are you doing all this for me, Matteo? You could have just given me money and sent me away safely after the street fight."

Matteo turned her chair so she was forced to look into his dark, steady eyes.

"Because when I look at you, I don't just see the woman who saved my family," Matteo murmured, his voice softening into a rare moment of absolute vulnerability. "I see someone who carries the same darkness I carry. Someone who understands what it means to protect the people you love at any cost. You aren't just a guest in my house anymore, Brielle. You belong here."

The air between them tightened with a sudden, intense warmth. Brielle reached up, her bandaged fingers wrapping around his wrist. For the first time in eleven years, the icy walls around her heart didn't feel quite so impenetrable.

Before either of them could speak further, Viktor bustled into the room, his face pale and grim.

"Boss," Viktor reported urgently. "We have a problem. Nonna Elena and Maya were returning from the private medical clinic. Julian's men ambushed the armored convoy on the expressway. They didn't try to take them—they forced the car off the road and took Nonna Elena."
