Chapter 5 - The Speakeasy in Pilsen

The air in the tunnels beneath Pilsen smelled of wet brick, stale beer, and sulfur.
Brielle checked the action on her compact semi-automatic pistol, her fingers moving with a calm, practiced fluidness that would have terrified the woman she was a month ago. She wore fitted black tactical gear, her dark hair pulled tight into a low braid. Beside her in the damp gloom stood Matteo and Viktor, surrounded by six heavily armed guards carrying suppressed carbines.
"Ray's office is past the main floor," Matteo murmured, his breath forming small white clouds in the chill subterranean air. "He stays behind bulletproof glass with four personal guards. We do this quietly until we are through the heavy doors."
Brielle nodded. "Understood."
They moved through the side access door. Beyond lay a bustling, illegal underground casino. Neon signs buzzed against crumbling brick walls as men in expensive suits and street enforcers sat around green felt tables, tossing stacks of unmarked bills into the center.
Before the room could realize what was happening, Viktor moved forward like a battering ram.
With precise, non-lethal efficiency, Matteo's team swept the floor. Suppressed shots took out the light rigs, plunging the gambling hall into chaos and red emergency light. Screams erupted as players scattered for the exits, only to find Matteo's secondary team blocking every corridor.
Brielle moved alongside Matteo, keeping her gun up, covering his flank as they breached the heavy oak door at the back of the hall.
Inside, "Silky" Ray Miller was frantically shoving flash drives and ledgers into an open briefcase. His two guards drew their weapons, but Brielle reacted before they could level their aim. She dropped low, kicking the legs out from the first guard, and brought the butt of her pistol down hard against the second guard's jaw.
In less than ten seconds, the room was secured.
Ray hit his knees, trembling, his hands raised high over his balding head. "Matteo! Please! I was just keeping the books! I didn't know—"
Matteo walked forward slowly, stepping on the open briefcase and crushing the plastic flash drives beneath his boot. He reached down, grabbed Ray by the collar, and hauled him up until they were eye-to-eye.
"Where is my uncle, Ray?" Matteo’s voice was barely a whisper, but it filled the small office with an overwhelming pressure.
"He's at the old grain silos by the canal!" Ray stammered, tears tracking through the dust on his cheeks. "He's consolidating his men! He has a shipment coming in from the river tonight—weapons, explosives, everything!"
Brielle stepped forward, her eyes cold as steel. "What about the girls he took? What about Lily Dawson eleven years ago?"
Ray looked at Brielle, his eyes widening in terror as he recognized the rage in her voice. "I... I don't know names! Julian didn't keep them here! He had a broker—a man called 'The Architect' who moved people out of state through the rail yard in Gary, Indiana!"

Brielle felt as if the floor had dropped out beneath her feet. Gary, Indiana. The rail yards. A tangible lead—a real thread to follow.
"Give us the access codes for the rail terminal ledgers," Matteo demanded, tightening his grip on Ray's throat. "Now."
