Chapter 3 - Shadows at the Door

The tiny apartment seemed to contract around Alessandro. The hum of the refrigerator, the sound of the wind outside, the soft, rhythmic breathing of little Annie examining her medicine box—everything faded into a dull, roaring static.
His daughter.
He knelt beside the cot, ignoring the dust on the floorboards, and gently took the older woman's trembling hands.
— Look at me, he ordered quietly. Tell me everything.
Her name was Margaret. She was Elena’s mother. When the syndicate war broke out three years ago, Elena had discovered she was pregnant just as Alessandro’s world was tearing apart. Fearing that bringing a child into his violent orbit would paint a target on the baby’s back, Elena had vanished into the underground network, hiding in plain sight in South Brooklyn, shielding her secret with every breath she had left.
— She watched you from afar, Margaret whispered, wiping a tear from her wrinkled cheek. Through the news, through whispers on the street. She knew you were rebuilding your empire. She knew you were safe. But she was too proud to crawl back, and then... the sickness took her chest.
Alessandro closed his eyes. The cold, ruthless mafia boss who had executed traitors without blinking felt a sudden, crushing fracture in his chest. For three years, he had believed he was alone at the top of the world, building a fortress out of money and fear.
And all the while, a piece of his soul had been living three miles away in a damp, decaying tenement.
— We are leaving, Alessandro said, standing up with a finality that brooked no argument. Pack what you need. My men will secure a medical transport. You are coming to the estate.
— Mr. Moretti, I can't—
— You are my daughter's grandmother, Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping into a hard, protective register. From this moment on, no one in this city touches you.
Before Margaret could reply, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the front hallway.
Clack.
The sound of a heavy-booted step on the wooden floorboards.
Alessandro’s head snapped toward the bedroom door. His hand instantly slipped beneath his coat, wrapping around the textured grip of his Sig Sauer P226.
— Boss, Marco’s voice hissed through the hidden earpiece, urgent and clipped. We got company. Three black-and-whites pulled up unmarked from the alley. Not cops. Vassily's cleanup crew. They tracked our plates.

The realization hit like lightning.
Vassily, the ruthless Russian bratva boss who had been gunning for Alessandro's territory for months, had followed them from the pharmacy. They had walked right into a trap, or worse, led the wolves straight to his daughter's doorstep.
