A three-year-old stranger asked a Mafia boss to take her home—then the silver songbird around her neck made him realize she was the daughter he had been searching for without knowing it.

The leather interior of the black Mercedes-Benz smelled of cedarwood, leather conditioner, and the cold ozone brought in by the Brooklyn storm.

Annie sat in the center of the plush leather backseat, looking impossibly small against the dark upholstery. She held the red plastic pharmacy bag in her lap with white-knuckled intensity, her wet sneakers leaving tiny dark prints on the floor mat.

Alessandro slid into the passenger seat beside the driver, Marco, while another man took the wheel. The engine thrummed to life with a deep, muffled purr.

— Where to, Boss? Marco asked, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror to track the little girl.

— Drive toward the old park on Fourth, Alessandro said quietly, his gaze fixed straight ahead on the rain-streaked windshield. And slow down. Let her guide us.

He didn't turn around immediately, but he could feel the atmospheric shift in the car. Alessandro Moretti was a man whose life was measured in calculations, power struggles, and bloodlines. Every person in his orbit served a function. Every action was premeditated.

Yet, as the car glided away from the curb, a flash of silver caught his eye in the side mirror.

Hanging around Annie’s thin, shivering neck, half-hidden beneath the collar of her soaked coat, was a fine silver chain. Dangling from it was a small, intricately carved pendant: a songbird with wings swept back in mid-flight, its eye a microscopic ruby.

Alessandro’s breath caught in his throat.

His hand went involuntarily to the inside pocket of his wool coat, his fingers brushing against a cold metal object he hadn't looked at in over three years—a heavy platinum signet ring engraved with the exact same crest: a soaring songbird.

The Moretti crest. A private mark worn only by the direct bloodline of the family, commissioned by his father thirty years ago, and given to only one other person.

Elena.

The name echoed in his mind like a ghost. Elena, who had vanished from his life during the brutal turf wars of 2022, when rival syndicates burned his safehouses and forced him into hiding. He had searched for her for months until the trail went stone cold, believing she had perished in the crossfire.

Alessandro turned slowly in his seat, his dark eyes locked on the little girl in the back.

— Annie, he said, his voice softer than it had been in a decade. Where did you get that necklace?

Annie blinked, her big, dark eyes looking up from her pharmacy bag. She touched the silver bird with trembling fingers.

— Mommy gave it to me, she whispered. She said it was a magic bird. She said if I ever got lost in the dark, the bird would find someone with a matching heart to take me home.

The words hit Alessandro like a physical blow. The silence in the car became absolute, save for the steady thrum of the tires against the wet pavement.
