Chapter 5 - The Battle for the Angel

Three days had passed since the explosive Commission meeting. The shadow of Donato Valenti had vanished from New York, his empire dismantled and absorbed by the Moretti Syndicate. Julian had been taken into custody by Aleandro’s loyalists, stripped of his wealth, and locked away in an isolated estate in upstate New York, awaiting a final trial by the family council.

At the hospital, Ruth Bennett’s recovery had been nothing short of miraculous. Surrounded by the top medical specialists money could buy, her heart function had stabilized dramatically.

It was a cold, crisp afternoon when Aleandro drove Annie to the hospital to bring her grandmother home.

Annie ran down the polished hospital corridor, her little pink coat fluttering behind her. "Grandma! Grandma!"

Ruth was sitting in a wheelchair near the window, dressed in new, warm clothes provided by the estate staff. When she saw Annie, her face lit up with a joy that transformed her tired features.

"Annie! My sweet baby!" Ruth opened her arms, and Annie leaped into her lap, hugging her grandmother so tightly that Ruth gasped in happy tears.

"Look, Grandma!" Annie beamed, pointing at a small silver heart necklace around her neck. "Aleandro gave me this! It has a picture of you and Mommy inside!"

Ruth touched the delicate locket, then looked up. Aleandro stood near the doorway, holding a bouquet of white roses and a thick folder of legal documents.

Ruth hugged Annie tightly, whispering into her hair before asking Mrs. Gable, who had accompanied them, to take Annie to the hospital gift shop to buy a plush toy.

Once the door closed, leaving Ruth and Aleandro alone, the air grew still.

"You kept your word," Ruth said softly, her voice filled with a complex mixture of gratitude and lingering grief. "The doctors told me everything you paid for... the surgery, the private suite, the top medications."

Aleandro walked over, placing the white roses on the table beside her. "I keep my promises, Ruth."

"Why are you doing all of this, Aleandro?" Ruth asked, searching his dark eyes. "You could have just given us money and sent us away. Why take us into your home? Why fight your own family for her?"

Aleandro walked to the window, looking out at the sprawling city below. "For twenty years, I believed that strength meant having no weaknesses. I thought that if I cared about anything, my enemies would use it to destroy me. So I built walls. I became the ruthless boss everyone feared."

He turned back to face her, his expression raw with an honesty he had never shown another human being.

"When Annie walked up to me in that storm, holding that little medicine bag, she wasn't afraid of me. She saw a man who could help her save her grandmother. She gave me back something I lost a long time ago... my humanity."

Ruth’s eyes welled with tears. She reached out, gesturing for him to come closer. Aleandro stepped forward, and to his surprise, Ruth took his hand, squeezing it gently.

"Elena loved her child more than life itself," Ruth whispered. "She died worrying that Annie would be left alone in this cold world. I was so angry at your family, Aleandro. I blamed you for what Julian did."

"You had every right to," Aleandro said quietly.

"No," Ruth shook her head. "I was wrong. You are not Julian. You are a good man, Aleandro Moretti. A man who protects his family."

Aleandro pulled the legal folder from under his arm and placed it in Ruth’s lap.

"What is this?" she asked.

"These are full guardianship and adoption papers," Aleandro explained. "With your consent, I want to legally adopt Annie as my daughter and heir. You will retain full maternal rights as her grandmother, and you will live with us at the estate for the rest of your days. She will have the best education, the best security, and a family that loves her."

Ruth looked down at the documents, tears dropping onto the paper. "An heir to the Moretti empire?"

"An heir to my heart, Ruth," Aleandro said softly. "Nothing more, nothing less."

Ruth picked up the pen resting on top of the folder. Without hesitation, she signed her name at the bottom of every page.

"Take care of our girl, Aleandro," she wept happily.

"With my life," he vowed.

Just then, the door burst open, and Annie ran back into the room holding a giant plush brown bear that was almost as big as she was.

"Look, Just Aleandro!" she giggled, holding the bear up to him. "I bought a bear like you!"

Aleandro laughed—a genuine, deep laugh that startled even Marco, who was standing outside in the hallway. Aleandro bent down and lifted both Annie and the giant bear into his arms.

"Come on, little one," Aleandro said, kissing her cheek softly. "Let's go home."
