Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

The air in the ballroom turned sharp and lethal.

I felt Vincent’s grip on my waist tighten slightly—not enough to hurt, but enough to anchor me as Ryan took three uncertain steps forward, his face pale as paper.

"Emily?" Ryan stuttered, his eyes darting frantically from my three-carat diamond ring up to the emerald gown, and finally to the towering figure of Vincent Moretti standing beside me. "What... what are you doing here? How do you know this man?"

I stood my ground, the fear that had consumed me for three weeks suddenly burning away, replaced by a cold, searing contempt.

"I think the better question, Ryan," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent circle of spectators, "is what are you doing in Chicago? I thought you were busy spending my life savings on your new girlfriend."

Several high-society women near the bar gasped softly, whispering behind their silk fans.

Ryan’s face flushed bright red with embarrassment. "Emily, don't do this here! You disappeared three weeks ago! You took my daughter!"

"Your daughter?"

The word left Vincent’s mouth like a gunshot.

Vincent stepped forward, placing himself between Ryan and me. He didn't raise his hands. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply looked down at Ryan with the cold, absolute detachment of a predator evaluating an insect.

"You have five seconds to rephrase that sentence, Mr. Vance," Vincent said, his voice so quiet, so deadly, that even Arthur Vance stepped back a pace.

"Listen here, Moretti!" Arthur interjected, stepping up beside Ryan, trying to maintain his authority before the gathered family captains. "This girl was married to Ryan three weeks ago! She is a nobody from Ohio! You picked her up on a commercial flight to cover up your financial embezzlements from the family board!"

Vincent let out a low, dark laugh that chilled the room to absolute zero.

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, black leather document folder. He threw it onto the marble table beside Arthur’s champagne glass.

"Those are the verified banking records from the Cleveland Sports Syndicate," Vincent announced smoothly, his voice ringing across the ballroom. "It details seventy-five thousand dollars in wire transfers from Arthur Vance's personal Cayman account to Ryan Vance... in exchange for tracking coordinates on my wife and daughter."

The ballroom erupted into shocked murmurs! The syndicate captains standing near the perimeter immediately shifted their stances, their eyes narrowing at Arthur.

"You sold your former wife and child to a rival captain for gambling debts, Ryan," Vincent continued, stepping directly into Ryan’s personal space until my ex-husband was practically cowering against the bar. "In my world... that makes you an accessory to kidnapping."

"Vincent, please!" Ryan squeaked, his knees trembling violently. "I didn't know! I just needed the money! Arthur told me he just wanted to talk to her!"

"Get him out of my sight," Vincent commanded flatly.

Marcus and two enforcers stepped out of the shadows, grabbing Ryan by his arms and dragging him kicking and screaming out the side entrance of the hotel!

Arthur stood alone, his face red with rage, his hands shaking as he looked at the hostile faces of the family board surrounding him.

"You think you've won, Vincent?" Arthur spat venomously. "This girl is a fake! She doesn't belong in this world! She will break the moment things get dirty!"

Vincent slowly turned back to look at me.

He walked up to me, took my left hand in his, and raised it to his lips, pressing a slow, deliberate kiss against the diamond ring on my finger.

"My wife," Vincent said, his obsidian eyes burning into Arthur’s soul, "has more strength in her pinky finger than you have in your entire bloodline. And tomorrow morning, Arthur... the board votes on your expulsion."

Without waiting for a reply, Vincent wrapped his arm around my waist, turning us toward the grand exit, leaving the destroyed remnants of my past and his enemies standing in the dust behind us.
