Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The interior of the Moretti estate was not the gaudy, gold-plated mansion I had expected from news stories. It was a masterpiece of classic architecture—soaring ceilings, dark walnut wood, floor-to-ceiling libraries, and massive stone fireplaces that crackled with warm light.

An elderly Italian woman with grey hair pulled into a neat bun met us in the grand foyer.

"Ah, Vincent," she breathed, her face softening as she looked at him, before her eyes drifted to me and the sleeping child in my arms. "And this is the young lady?"

"This is Emily, Rosa," Vincent said, taking my wet coat and handing it to a butler. "And her daughter, Lily. They will be occupying the master guest wing. Prepare the nursery adjoining the master suit immediately."

"Of course," Rosa smiled warmly, bowing her head slightly to me. "Welcome, child. I have fresh broth and warm bread in the kitchen. Come, let me take the little one."

I pulled Lily closer reflexively. "No... I've got her."

Rosa’s eyes showed no offense, only deep, maternal understanding. "Of course, dear. Follow me."

Twenty minutes later, Lily was tucked into a stunning wooden crib in an adjoining room lined with soft plush toys and cashmere blankets. I sat on the edge of a massive mahogany four-poster bed in the master suite, staring down at my muddy shoes against the silk Persian rug.

The door clicked open softly.

Vincent walked in, having stripped off his suit jacket and tie. He wore a simple black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing dark, intricate tattoos spiraling up his skin—old Italian symbols of protection, strength, and memory.

He carried a silver tray with two mugs of steaming tea and set it on the nightstand beside me.

"Chamomile," Vincent said quietly. "It helps with the shock."

"I'm not in shock," I lied, my voice shaking. "I'm just... trying to figure out how I'm going to explain to my school board that I won't be showing up for my teaching interview on Monday."

Vincent sat down in the leather armchair across from the bed. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, watching me with an intensity that made my skin prickle.

"You won't be taking that teaching job, Emily," he said plainly.

"I have to work, Vincent!" I snapped, standing up from the bed, my frustration finally boiling over. "I have eleven hundred dollars in my bank account! I have a child to feed! I cannot sit in this luxury castle playing house while you fight your mob wars!"

"You will have ten million dollars transferred into a private, untraceable trust account in your name by eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Vincent replied without blinking.

I stopped dead in my tracks. "What?"

"You are currently playing the role of my wife," Vincent explained smoothly, taking a slow sip from his mug. "A Moretti wife does not teach high school English for forty thousand dollars a year while living in a studio apartment in Pilsen. If Arthur’s spies see you working at a public school, the lie crumbles. The trust fund legitimizes your position. It gives you complete financial independence."

"I don't want your money!" I yelled softly, conscious of Lily sleeping in the next room. "You can't just buy my life!"

"I am not buying your life, Emily," Vincent said, his tone softening as he stood up and walked toward me. He stopped three feet away, his towering height casting a long shadow across the room. "I am protecting it. Arthur Vance is a man who cut his own brother's brake lines twenty years ago to take control of the docks. He has no morality. He has no restraint. The moment you step outside these gates without my security detail, his men will take you."

"Then let me go back to Ohio!" I begged, tears filling my eyes again. "Let me take Lily and leave the country!"

"He is watching the airports, the train stations, and the highways," Vincent said quietly. "The safest place in North America for you and Lily right now... is right beside me."

He stepped closer, his hand reaching out, his fingers gently wiping away a stray tear from my cheek. His thumb brushed over my skin with a warmth that sent an electric jolt through my chest.

"Give me thirty days, Emily," Vincent whispered, his dark eyes locking onto mine with hypnotic intensity. "Thirty days to clean up my house. Thirty days to eliminate Arthur’s network. Once he is neutralized, I will give you a new identity, a house anywhere in the world, and enough wealth to ensure Lily never wants for anything."

I stared into his eyes, looking for the monster the newspapers described. But all I saw was a man burdened by absolute authority, carrying a cold, ancient pain.

"And what happens during those thirty days?" I asked, my breath catching in my throat.

May you like

Vincent’s gaze dropped to my lips for a fraction of a second before returning to my eyes.

"During those thirty days," Vincent murmured, "you are the most cherished, heavily protected woman in America. And anyone who looks at you wrong... dies."
