CHAPTER 3: THE SEAT SHE LOST

James slowly lowered the letter.

The silence in the room felt unbearable.

Claire's words echoed inside his mind.

She had trusted Serena.

Trusted her enough to care for Lily after she was gone.

But in the letter, Claire had left one warning.

"Never let Lily feel like a guest in her own home."

James looked toward Serena.

For the first time, he saw her clearly.

Not as a grieving friend.

Not as a devoted wife.

But as the woman who had failed the one promise Claire asked her to keep.

“You knew.”

His voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

Serena's confidence cracked.

“James, you're misunderstanding—”

“No.”

He folded the letter carefully.

Then walked to the head of the table.

Every eye followed him.

Slowly, he pulled out the chair beside his own.

The chair that belonged to Lily.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

Lily hesitated.

Fear made her glance toward Serena first.

Seeking permission.

The sight broke something inside James.

Another wound he hadn't seen.

Another failure he hadn't noticed.

Finally, Lily stood.

She walked toward him carrying the bowl with both hands.

James gently took it away.

Then lifted her into the chair himself.

The room watched in silence.

He placed Claire's letter beside her plate.

Then he turned toward Serena.

“You're choosing her over me?”

Serena whispered.

James looked across the table.

At the empty chair that once belonged to Claire.

Then back at the woman who sat there now.

“No.”

His voice never rose.

“I am choosing the child you promised to love.”

Serena's face turned white.

James reached for her dinner plate.

Lifted it from the table.

And carried it away.

The gesture was simple.

But devastating.

When he returned, he placed one hand on Lily's chair.

“From now on, this is her seat.”

His eyes locked onto Serena.

“And you lost yours.”

Tears rolled down Lily's cheeks.

Not from sadness.

From relief.

Because for the first time since her mother died...

someone had finally put her back where she belonged.

And from that night forward, every chair in the house stayed exactly where it should be.

May you like

Especially hers.
