CHAPTER 2: THE LETTER IN HER POCKET

The room fell silent.

James stood frozen near the doorway.

Rain still clung to his coat.

His eyes moved slowly across the scene.

The bowl on the rug.

The chair pulled away.

The relatives avoiding eye contact.

And finally—

His daughter kneeling on the floor.

Serena immediately stepped forward.

“She chose to sit there.”

James didn't answer.

He simply walked toward Lily.

The little girl lowered her head instinctively.

As if she expected to be blamed.

That hurt him more than anything.

Then he noticed something.

A corner of paper sticking out from her pocket.

An old envelope.

Worn at the edges.

Touched countless times.

James recognized the handwriting instantly.

His heart stopped.

Claire.

His late wife.

Carefully, he pulled the envelope free.

Written across the front were six simple words:

"For Lily, when she forgets she belongs."

The room seemed to disappear around him.

His hands trembled as he opened the letter.

Silence filled the dining room.

Even Serena stopped smiling.

James read.

And with every line, his face changed.

Shock.

Pain.

Disbelief.

Then anger.

Because Claire had written this letter before she died.

A message for the future.

A message meant for moments exactly like this.

She wrote that Lily's seat at the table was not a privilege.

It was a promise.

A promise that no one could take away.

Then James reached a paragraph that made his blood run cold.

Claire had written Serena's name.

And what she wrote next changed everything.
