Chapter 4 - The Siege on Delancey Street

The heavy steel door of the underground vault shuddered as Grant’s mercenaries began using a blowtorch on the reinforced hinges. Sparks showered through the dark corridor outside.
Through the vault's security intercom system, Grant’s voice echoed, cold, distorted, and unhinged.
"Mara!" Grant yelled from the hallway outside. "Open this door! Give me the drive, and I might let Cole live! You have five minutes before my men blow this vault open!"
Inside the vault, Mara was trembling, holding onto Nathan’s arm. "Nathan, what are we going to do?! They have weapons!"
"Mara, look at me," Nathan said, his voice entirely calm, his hands cupping her face gently. "Do you trust me?"
"With my life," Mara answered without a second's hesitation.
"Good," Nathan smiled softly. He turned to his master computer console and hit a red sequence button labeled PROJECT EXODUS.
Instantly, the entire server system began transmitting the contents of the silver drive—along with Nathan’s three years of collected evidence—directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and every major news network in the state of Ohio.
A digital countdown timer appeared on the screen: TRANSMISSION 100% COMPLETE.
"The evidence is officially public domain," Nathan announced. "Federal agents are already deploying to this location right now."
Outside, the steel vault door buckled with a deafening CRACK. The hinges snapped, and the door was kicked open.
Grant Halloway stepped into the vault, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries pointing assault rifles at Nathan and Mara.
Grant’s face was twisted in psychotic rage. He pointed his pistol directly at Nathan’s chest.
"Hand over the drive, Cole!" Grant screamed, sweat pouring down his face. "Hand it over, or I will paint this wall with your brains right in front of her!"
Nathan stepped in front of Mara, shielding her completely. He didn't raise his hands in surrender. He stood tall, looking at Grant with utter contempt.
"You're too late, Grant," Nathan said quietly.
Grant blinked, his eyes darting to the wall monitors behind Nathan.
The screens were broadcasting live news channels. A breaking news banner flashed across the screen in bright red letters: STATE SENATE CANDIDATE GRANT HALLOWAY INDICTED ON FEDERAL RACKETEERING, MONEY LAUNDERING, AND MURDER CHARGES.
Grant’s phone began ringing frantically. He pulled it out with a shaking hand—it was his lead defense attorney.
"Boss!" the lawyer screamed through the speaker. "The Feds just seized all your offshore accounts! The FBI has an active warrant for your arrest! It's all over the news!"
Grant’s pistol shook violently in his grip. The world he had spent twenty years building—his wealth, his political ambitions, his invincibility—had vanished in a single second.
"You..." Grant whispered, looking at Mara with psychotic hatred. "You ruined me, Mara!"
Grant raised his pistol, aiming directly at Mara’s head, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"No!" Nathan roared.

Nathan lunged forward, slamming his heavy body into Grant just as the pistol fired.
A loud gunshot echoed through the small vault.
