Chapter 2 - The Confrontation at the Gala

Two weeks passed, weeks that transformed Mara’s world entirely.

Nathan didn't just stay in her life; he became an anchor of absolute safety and warmth. He showed up at her small apartment with blueberry pancakes on Sunday mornings, built a custom wooden bookshelf for Josie’s nursery, and walked Mara to her car after late-night nursing shifts at Grantham Children’s Hospital.

For the first time in three years, Mara felt her heart unfreeze. She was falling deeply, irrevocably in love with the broad-shouldered restorer who treated her like a treasure and her daughter like a princess.

However, the shadow of Grant Halloway was drawing nearer.

On a chilly Friday evening, the Grand Ashford Medical Gala was held at the historic Plaza Hotel. As a senior pediatric nurse, Mara was required to attend. Nathan had offered to be her escort, looking breathtakingly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo.

As they stood near the grand marble staircase inside the chandelier-lit ballroom, Mara’s world shattered into pieces.

The heavy oak doors opened, and a crowd of flashbulbs went off.

Walking into the ballroom, flanked by security guards and news reporters, was Grant Halloway. He was fifty pounds heavier in his posture, wearing a ten-thousand-dollar suit, his charismatic, cold smile plastered on his face for the cameras.

Mara’s breath hitched. Panic seized her throat. "Nathan... it's him. He’s here."

Nathan instantly stepped in front of her, his tall frame shielding Mara completely from view. "Stay calm, sweetheart. Look at me. Only at me."

Grant was moving through the crowd, shaking hands with hospital trustees and city politicians. His eyes scanned the room with calculated arrogance—until his gaze fell upon the corner where Nathan stood.

Grant’s smile vanished. His eyes narrowed as he recognized Nathan Cole—the stubborn developer who had refused to break under his syndicate's pressure years ago.

With a smug, cruel sneer, Grant walked over, a glass of scotch held in his hand.

"Well, well," Grant purred, his voice dripping with condescension. "If it isn't Nathan Cole. Still scraping a living fixing old garbage buildings, I see?"

"I build things that last, Grant," Nathan replied calmly, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his body position totally blocking Grant’s line of sight to Mara. "You just ruin things and hide behind lawyers."

Grant chuckled darkly. "Careful, Cole. You know what happens to people who get in my way. I take everything they love."

"You try," Nathan said softly.

Suddenly, Grant took a step to the side to brush past Nathan—and stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing right behind Nathan, her face pale but her shoulders held high, was Mara.

Grant’s glass nearly slipped from his fingers. The arrogant political candidate vanished, replaced by a dark, volatile monster.

"Mara?" Grant gasped, his eyes wide with shock and sudden, twisted possession. "Mara... you've been hiding in this pathetic little town?!"

"Stay away from me, Grant," Mara said, her voice shaking slightly, but holding her ground.

Grant took an aggressive step forward, reaching out to grab Mara’s arm. "You took my daughter! You ran away with my child!"

Before Grant’s hand could touch Mara, Nathan moved with blinding speed.

Nathan grabbed Grant’s wrist in a vise-like grip, twisting it back just enough to force the billionaire to his knees with a sharp gasp of pain. The room went dead silent.

"Touch her again," Nathan growled, his voice a dangerous, low rumble that shook Grant to his core, "and I will break every bone in your hand."

"Security!" Grant shrieked, sweating profusely as he looked up at Nathan's deadly eyes. "Get this maniac off me!"

Two large security guards rushed forward, but Nathan released Grant, stepping back to wrap a protective arm firmly around Mara’s waist.

Grant scrambled up, brushing off his tuxedo, his face bright red with humiliation and murderous rage.

"You think you can protect her, Cole?" Grant spat, pointing a trembling finger at them. "I have full legal team, unlimited money, and judges in my pocket! I will file for full emergency custody of Josie tomorrow morning! I will take my daughter, ruin your company, and put Mara in a state prison for parental abduction!"

Grant turned on his heel and stormed out of the ballroom, his guards clearing a path.

Mara collapsed against Nathan’s chest, weeping softly in sheer terror. "He's going to take Josie, Nathan... he's going to destroy us!"

Nathan held her tightly, kissing the top of her head. "He’s not taking anyone, Mara. Because Grant just walked directly into the trap I’ve been setting for him for three years."
