Chapter 10 - THE MORNING OF A NEW ERAFive years later.

The summer of 1893 brought a warm, golden afternoon to the sprawling gardens of Ashborne.

The estate had changed remarkably over the years. The cold, intimidating atmosphere was entirely gone, replaced by vibrant flower beds, children’s toys scattered on the lawn, and the constant, happy sound of laughter echoing through the high stone corridors.

Sitting on a wide tartan blanket near the edge of the rose garden was Clara, now twenty-seven years old. She looked exquisitely beautiful, wearing a light yellow summer dress, her dark hair pinned up loosely.

In her arms, she held a chubby, blue-eyed fourteen-month-old baby girl named Victoria—her and Julian’s second child—who was happily babbling and reaching for a dandelion.

Nearby, eleven-year-old Leo—now tall, healthy, his asthma completely managed, his confidence restored—was teaching his younger brother, three-year-old Thomas, how to kick a leather football across the grass.

"Pass it here, Thomas!" Leo laughed, dodging around the laughing toddler.

Sitting beside Clara on the blanket was Julian.

He had retired almost entirely from political life in London, choosing instead to manage his vast agricultural estates, fund schools for working-class children, and oversee the Clara Higgins Foundation, which provided legal aid and housing for impoverished women across England.

Julian leaned over, wrapping his arm around Clara’s waist, pulling her gently against his side, resting his head against hers as they watched their children play.

"You look very serious today, Your Grace," Clara teased gently, turning her head to kiss his temple.

"I was thinking about a promise I made five years ago," Julian smiled softly, taking baby Victoria from her arms and setting the little girl gently on his lap, letting her play with his gold pocket watch chain.

"Which promise?" Clara asked.

"The promise that the morning belonged to us," Julian replied, looking out over the rolling green hills of their estate. "Look at them, Clara. Leo is top of his class at Eton. Thomas is healthy. Victoria has your eyes. And Ashborne is full of life."

Clara leaned her head on his shoulder, taking his hand in hers, watching their sons running through the bright green grass under the cloudless blue sky.

"We built a good life, Julian," Clara murmured, her heart full of a deep, unshakeable peace. "From a broken collarbone and a silver cane... we built a kingdom."

"No, my love," Julian corrected softly, turning to look into her beautiful green eyes—the eyes that had saved his son, restored his soul, and changed his world forever. "You brought the light back to the kingdom."

Across the sunny lawn, Leo scored a goal, sending three-year-old Thomas into fits of giggles as the golden retriever tumbled happily around their feet.

And there, in the warm, golden heart of Berkshire, surrounded by love, justice, and the enduring laughter of their children, the Duke and Duchess of Ashborne lived happily ever after.
