Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER IN THE GARDENThe night before the wedding, a peaceful quiet settled over the vast grounds of Ashborne Estate.

The rain had passed, leaving behind a crisp, clear summer night filled with the scent of blooming roses, damp earth, and jasmine. A bright full moon hung over the rolling hills of Berkshire, casting a silver glow over the stone terraces and marble fountains.

Clara stepped out onto the terrace—the exact terrace where, three months earlier, her blood had spilled across the stone.

She wore a soft white velvet wrap over her nightgown, her right arm completely healed, her skin restored to its soft, healthy glow. She walked to the marble balustrade, resting her hands against the cool stone, looking out at the glittering stars above.

She remembered the terrified scullery maid who had stood behind the marble urn, holding a tray of empty champagne glasses, afraid to be seen.

She remembered the agonizing crack of the silver cane.

She remembered the cold, dark world she had lived in after her father died.

"Thinking about the past?" a deep, familiar voice asked gently.

Julian stepped out from the French doors, wearing a dark velvet smoking jacket. He walked up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"I was thinking about how strange life is," Clara whispered, leaning back into his warm embrace. "If Lord Fitzroy had not gotten drunk that night... if Leo had not walked downstairs... I would still be in the scullery, polishing silver."

"No," Julian said firmly, kissing her cheek. "Fate would have brought us together, Clara. It might have taken longer, but a soul as bright as yours could not stay hidden in the dark forever. You were meant to be here."

"Are you happy, Julian?" she asked, turning slightly in his arms to look up at his handsome face.

Julian looked down at her, his dark grey eyes filled with a devotion so deep, so profound, that it made her throat feel tight with emotion.

"For three years after my wife died, I thought happiness was a luxury meant for other men," Julian murmured, taking her hand and placing it over his heart. "I thought my heart was frozen solid, Clara. But you didn't just thaw it. You gave me a reason to live again. You gave my son his father back. Happy does not even begin to describe what I feel."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. Inside sat a simple, delicate gold pocket watch.

Clara opened it. Inscribed on the inside cover in elegant handwriting were the words:

To my brave Clara. The shadow is gone. The morning is ours. — Julian.

Tears filled Clara’s eyes. She closed the watch, holding it tight against her chest. "It’s beautiful, Julian."

"It belonged to my mother," Julian whispered, wrapping his arms around her again as they looked out over the silver gardens together. "Tomorrow, you become the Duchess of Ashborne. But to me... you will always be the girl who stood between my son and the dark."

May you like

"I will always protect this family, Julian," Clara promised softly, turning in his arms to press her lips against his. "With everything I am."

They stood together on the moonlit terrace, held in a deep, peaceful silence, ready to face the dawn of their new life.
