Chapter 5 - The Grand Opening

Six months later, the morning sun broke over the coastal town of Rockport, Maine, casting a warm golden light across the blue waters of the harbor.

The air smelled of sea salt, fresh pine, and celebration. Bunting in blue and white fluttered from the light poles along the harbor road, and hundreds of local residents, town officials, and journalists gathered outside a breathtaking new brick-and-timber building standing at the edge of the water.

Above the entrance carved into solid oak was the name: The Montgomery-Stone Children's Foundation & Library.

The building, designed by world-renowned architects and built by local craftsmen, offered free literacy programs, arts workshops, and family counseling services for mothers and children across the state.

A grand red ribbon was stretched across the front doors.

Standing behind the ribbon was Ethan Stone, looking handsome in a tailored grey suit, holding hands with Claire. She wore an elegant white lace dress, her engagement ring and a delicate new gold wedding band gleaming on her finger.

Beside them stood Samantha, now six years old, looking like a little princess in a light blue dress. In her arm, as always, sat Mabel the rabbit—who now sported a shiny silver collar with a tiny bell.

Harrison and Sarah Jenkins stood among the crowd, smiling broadly, while a dozens of local children gathered near the front steps, waiting excitedly to enter the new playground behind the building.

The Mayor of Rockport stepped up to the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, today marks a new chapter for our community. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Ethan Stone, we are opening a sanctuary of learning, safety, and hope for generations to come."

The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause.

The Mayor handed a massive pair of ceremonial scissors to Samantha. "Samantha, would you do us the honor?"

Samantha looked up at Ethan. "Daddy, will you help me?"

Ethan knelt beside his daughter, placing his large, strong hand over her tiny ones on the handles of the scissors. Claire leaned down beside them, her hand resting gently on Ethan’s shoulder.

"Together, sweetheart," Ethan whispered softly.

"On three!" Samantha announced to the crowd in her clear, confident voice. "One... two... three!"

SNIP!

The red ribbon fell away, and the crowd burst into cheers. The heavy oak doors swung open, and dozens of children rushed inside, their laughter filling the high-ceilinged atrium.

Claire stood on her tiptoes, pressing a soft kiss against Ethan’s lips as the crowd cheered around them. "Thank you, my love," she whispered.

"Thank you," Ethan replied, pulling her tight against his chest. "You saved me."
