Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the Boardroom

Three weeks later, the atmosphere inside Thompson Industries had undergone a seismic transformation. The corridors, once echoing with the sterile, hurried footsteps of overworked employees living in fear of the next corporate purge, now buzzed with a cautious, growing optimism. Word had spread through the ranks about the CEO's sudden policy shift—the wage increases, the medical trusts, the restructured facility management division.

For the first time in corporate history, the employees felt valued.

Yet, not everyone within the glass tower shared that optimism.

On the forty-second floor, Arthur Vance paced furiously back and forth across his spacious corner office, his cell phone pressed tightly to his ear. Across from him sat Victoria Sterling, the senior executive vice president of investor relations, whose face was twisted into a mask of cold fury.

"I'm telling you, the man has lost his mind," Arthur hissed into the phone, speaking to a disgruntled major shareholder. "He’s reallocated over three million dollars in operational capital into employee benefit funds and medical trusts. Our Q1 margins are projected to drop by four percent! At this rate, the board won't have a choice—we'll have to trigger Section 8 of the corporate bylaws for executive incapacitation."

Victoria crossed her arms, her diamond bracelets clinking sharply. "It’s all because of that cleaning woman. Martinez. Marcus spent three hours at her apartment in Queens two weeks ago, and now he’s treating the company like a charitable foundation. If we let this continue, the institutional investors are going to revolt at the next shareholder meeting."

"We aren't going to let it continue," Arthur said darkly, ending the call and dropping his phone onto his desk. "I've already consulted with corporate legal counsel. Section 8 allows the board of directors to temporarily suspend the CEO’s operational authority if there is documented evidence of financial recklessness detrimental to shareholder value. We have the signatures of four board members. We can force a vote by Friday."

"And Marcus?" Victoria asked, narrowing her eyes. "He won't go down without a fight."

"Let him fight," Arthur smirked, a cruel, calculating light entering his eyes. "We have the numbers. By Friday afternoon, Marcus Thompson will be stripped of his executive powers, and I will be sitting in that corner office, restoring profitability through good old-fashioned corporate ruthlessness."

Unbeknownst to Arthur and Victoria, corporate espionage wasn't a one-way street. Decades of running a global empire had taught Marcus to install redundant security and audit protocols across every department—including his own executive suite.

Down in his private office, Marcus sat watching a silent, high-definition security recording streaming on his secondary monitor. The feed captured Arthur and Victoria conspiring in the corner office, their words transcribed in real-time by an AI audio processor.

Marcus watched the screen with an expression of cold, clinical amusement. For years, he had tolerated Arthur’s corporate shark mentality because it drove short-term profits. But now, seeing Arthur plot to overthrow a humanitarian initiative designed to save working families, Marcus realized that the true rot in Thompson Industries wasn't among the low-level employees on the night shift.

It was right here at the top.

He picked up his desk phone and dialed security chief Viktor Vance.

"Viktor," Marcus said smoothly. "Prepare the legal audit files for financial embezzlement regarding the regional facility consolidation contracts between 2022 and 2024. And have federal marshals on standby for Friday morning. We're going to clean house."
