Chapter 3 - The Descent to Queens

The rain was falling in a cold, relentless drizzle when Marcus’s black town car pulled up outside a decaying pre-war walk-up apartment building in Jackson Heights, Queens. It was an address worlds away from the manicured lawns of his Westchester estate or the sleek minimalism of his Manhattan penthouse.

He instructed his driver, Thomas, to wait in the car. Marcus stepped out into the damp evening air, pulling his wool overcoat tight against his chest. The neighborhood smelled of wet asphalt, exhaust fumes, and the rich, comforting scent of authentic street-vendor tacos mixed with damp brick.

He walked up the three flights of narrow, poorly lit stairs, the linoleum floor creaking beneath his handmade Italian leather shoes. According to HR records, Sarah Martinez lived in Apartment 3B.

He paused outside the battered wooden door. From inside, he could hear the faint, sweet sound of children's voices reading aloud, followed by the soft, soothing hum of a nursery rhyme. It was the exact same voice he had heard over the phone—Lily.

Marcus raised his hand and knocked twice.

The reading stopped instantly. Inside, there was the shuffling of small feet, followed by the sound of a deadbolt sliding back. The door swung open a few inches, held safely by a brass security chain. A pair of wide, hazel-brown hazel eyes peered out through the crack—eyes identical to the ones Marcus had imagined while listening on the phone.

"Hello?" Lily whispered cautiously, recognizing the tall, imposing figure standing in the dim hallway, though she had never seen him in person.

Marcus knelt down on one knee, ignoring the damp grime on the hallway floor, bringing his face level with the opening in the door. He offered a gentle, tentative smile—a facial expression he hadn't practiced in decades.

"Hello, Lily. It's me. The man from the clouds."

Lily gasped softly, her small hands flying to her mouth. "The... the man who promised to pray for Abuela?"

"That's right," Marcus said softly. "I'm Marcus. Is your mommy home?"

Before Lily could answer, a tired, anxious voice called out from deeper within the apartment. "Lily, honey, who's at the door? Is it the landlord again?"

A woman appeared in the narrow hallway behind Lily. She looked to be in her early thirties, wearing faded jeans and an oversized cotton sweater with rolled-up sleeves. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, and dark, exhausted purple circles bruised the skin beneath her eyes. Her posture was tense, defensive, the stance of someone who spent every waking hour bracing for the next catastrophe life was about to hurl at her.

Then she saw Marcus.

Sarah Martinez froze, her breath catching in her throat. Even dressed in casual civilian clothes, Marcus Thompson possessed an undeniable aura of power and wealth. Sarah had seen his photo in financial magazines left behind in executive boardrooms. She knew exactly who he was.

"M-Mr. Thompson?" Sarah stammered, her face draining of color as she instinctively pulled Lily slightly behind her skirt. "I... I'm so sorry. Did I do something wrong at work? Was my cleaning section not up to standard? I can come in early tonight, I swear—please, don't fire me. I need this job."

The sheer panic in her voice struck Marcus like a physical blow. Here was a woman who worked herself to the bone, yet lived in constant, paralyzing terror that a billionaire corporate tyrant would casually strip away her meager livelihood with a stroke of a pen.

Marcus stood up slowly, holding his hands open in a gesture of absolute surrender.

"Sarah," he said, his voice softer and more vulnerable than it had ever been in a corporate boardroom. "You didn't do anything wrong. In fact... I came here to apologize."
