Chapter 6: The Verdict of the Public

The fall of Victoria Vance was as spectacular as her rise had been calculated.
By January 2026, the story had broken across the state media. The headline in the Daily Chronicle was accompanied by a still-frame from the recovered security footage: "Socialite Arrested for Child Abuse and Forced Labor in Bellevue Mansion." The elite circles that Victoria had spent years navigating closed their doors instantly. The charity boards issued formal disavowals, and her former friends pretended they couldn't remember her name when reporters called.
The criminal trial took place in the county circuit court on a crisp, clear winter morning.
Victoria sat at the defense table, her signature silk and diamonds replaced by a plain, dark navy suit. Her hair was messy, her face pale and drawn without the aid of high-end cosmetics. Beside her, her attorney looked defeated before the session even began.
Richard and Lily didn't attend the trial; the judge had ruled that Lily’s video deposition and the absolute certainty of the server footage were more than enough to protect her from the trauma of cross-examination. I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Marcus, representing the family.
The district attorney stood before the judge, his voice carrying the moral weight of an entire community's outrage. "Your Honor, the defendant didn't just mistreat a child. She systematically dismantled a young girl's psychological safety inside her own home. She used her position of authority to turn a daughter into an indentured servant, all while exploiting the family's wealth for her own vanity."
He pointed to the monitor, where the video of Lily kneeling on the marble floor played in a continuous, heartbreaking loop.
Victoria’s attorney stood up, his voice lacking any real conviction. "Your Honor, my client expresses deep remorse... it was a lapse in judgment brought on by severe marital stress..."
"A lapse in judgment lasts a moment, counselor," the judge interrupted, his voice dropping like an iron anvil. "This was a calculated system of cruelty carried out over six months. The defendant used psychological coercion to silence a grieving child."

The judge leaned forward, his eyes drilling into Victoria. "I sentence you to four years at the state correctional facility for women, with no possibility of early release for the first two years. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is issued. You are never to come within one thousand feet of Lily Vance or any property owned by the Vance estate."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead her away, Victoria looked back at the empty gallery, searching for the society friends who used to toast her health. There was no one there. Her daughter Chloe had already moved into a small apartment in Ohio with her biological father, refusing to answer her mother's legal correspondence. The mansion of marble had become an absolute prison of her own making.
