Chapter 9 - Justice and Restoration

For a second, I saw the desperate, trapped look of a cornered rat cross Lorenzo's face. He swung his pistol toward the container, desperate to grab a hostage.
He never even got his finger around the trigger.
A muffled crack echoed through the rail yard. A bullet from a sniper rifle hidden in the crane above shattered Lorenzo’s right wrist. The pistol dropped from his numbed hand with a sharp clatter against the frozen ground, and Lorenzo screamed, collapsing to his knees as he clutched his bleeding hand.
My enforcers moved in instantly, kicking him face-down into the gravel and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.
"Take him to the deepest cell in the basement," I ordered without looking back at him. "Let him think about what it means to betray a family."
"Yes, boss!" two enforcers barked, dragging the screaming traitor away toward the waiting SUVs.
The rail yard fell quiet once more, save for the whistling of the winter wind.
I turned around and walked back toward the open door of the shipping container. Beatrice was standing in the doorway, holding little Elena tightly against her chest, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock, relief, and overwhelming disbelief.
I stopped a few feet away, taking off my heavy coat and gently draping it over Beatrice’s shivering shoulders. Then, I knelt down so I was at eye level with the little girl.

Elena looked at me, tilting her head curiously, her bright green eyes mirroring the sister I had lost and miraculously found again.
"Hello, little one," I said, my voice softening into a warmth I hadn't felt in over a decade. "I'm your uncle. And I promise you... you will never be cold or hungry again."
